Axxess Users - Am I making a good choice?

Hi all,

I am about to invest in a 384k express+ Fibre account from Axxess, but want to get the opinion of this forum before doing anything rash. I have contacted support about all my worries and have got very fast replies, but I just wish to feel more secure by asking here too. They do seem strangely cheaper than others.

What I want:

1) Ability to download at all times, including P2P downloads. Axxess has assured me the account is unshaped, and the only ports blocked are 435 and 436. Hence this should not be a problem. I know speeds will be slow in peak hours, and I do not care about peak hours.

2) Online gaming with a reasonable ping, internationally. I have seen some people complaining about this. Should I be worried? I am used to playing on wireless with a ping of 400-500. Surely this will give me 100-300?

3) No hidden costs. R999p/m and R413p/m Telkom rental. Nothing more, right?

4) No matter what the amount downloaded, you will always be connected at at least 192k, correct?

I have been on the same package now for the past three months. (384 Express Fibre)

To be honest, I don't play online games all that much - but I did try it out. I played COD4 international. The times that I played I was able to get reasonable servers with ping rates of 300 plus to play on. That was playable for me.

Downloading - well I still have to see my downloads running at my full line speed (I have a 4MB ADSL line) in the evenings.Should be getting about 350 -400 KB/s. This does happen now and again, but it does not last long. Not too sure of the reason. I can only think that it is because of P2P downloading issues like sharing ratios and seeders etc. Most of my big downloads I run overnight until they are finished downloading.

All in all, I average about 100 Gb a month. Don't know about downtime or outages - never had any of those so far!! :) :)

Anything below about 180 ms lateny for international gaming is wishful thinking at best, so you will experience latency of 200-400 ms on most international servers. This is simply a restriction of fibre optic technology itself and not really in the control of the ISP.

You are correct on all the other stuff though, I have been using it for a few months now and it is actually very rarely that i see anything below full line speed, obviously excluding peak time. My downloads via Rapidshare are always running at 3.5-3.7mbps.

The tech support is usually fairly quick to get hold of too.

I am not trying to blow smoke up axxess' rear, but to date I have received absolutely everything they promised and I am extremely happy with the service.
 
I've mainly been downloading using an international news server with 20 connections. Line can always be maxed out after hours, if needed. Although I tend to reduce the download speed so that myself and others on the network can also enjoy a decent browsing and gaming experience at the same time.

Im in the process of reactivating my account with Axxess, Im just using too many GB's and its costing me a fortune... so going back to uncapped express

Though this time Im going with the sat and not the fibre... hope its not that much worse! :confused:
 
And I was just wondering about this package earlier today... From what I under stand the line is throttled to a download spead of 192, but I never saw what the uplaod is throttled to. Would appreciate some comments on this?

From my speed tests that I have done - the upload is not throttled, only the download. ;)
 
Yip, my Axxess 384k I use for torrents and only torrents. Pretty much rocks. I have been using it since March and get between 300 and 400 GB per month. When I started with it, I was getting over 600GB per month... now I am kind of running out of things to get :-) I know some have complained about their account, and have had poor download speeds, but besides very minor issues, I have had no problems.

All I can say is that its the BOMB!!!

Works very well and you can literally download until you drop!! Excellent product. Highly recommended.

BTW - and Axxess support team is excellent so you won't have a prob there either
 
I have had nothing bad to say about axxess, very professional and helpdesk is very clued up. they have been very open with every thing so far.

I'm also with Axxess.

The helpdesk people are great.
They're patient, knowledgeable and super friendly.

I have a 4mbps line with an Axxess 626 connection, 15GB cap.

This "626" connection only works between 6PM & 6AM - which is fine by me as I work during the day.
Unshaped, intl traffic is routed via fiber, not satellite.
(can't play online games on satellite as the latency is a killer, literally)

File Sharing (utorrent) download speeds are the same or better than a) SAIX wimax, b) 1meg diginet, c) Adept Internet's 4mbps DSL solution (provided by IS), and d) Online Direct's 4mbps ADSL solution (also provided by IS).

The best I got (combined, all downloads) was around 260Kb. (file sharing off international peers)

I'm assuming if I download from SA-based peers the speed will increase to around 400Kb.

Under Vista (with Download Accelerator Plus) I get between 300-400Kb.

Under Fedora 10 I get slightly less.
But still fast nice.


For someone at home (after hours and weekends only) the "626" connection makes a lot of sense.

I am on the same package, 384k Uncapped Fiber and I can tell you I have been VERY happy with this service!

Although it's only been my 3rd day of using i'm loving it. It's such a good feeling leaving my downloads queued up in my download manager and not worrying about getting 'capped' ;)

After 8pm I can download and browse, but during the day when I need to make a quick Skype call or a EFT I quickly pause the download manager and run off 384k smoothly!

I'd definitely go ahead with it!
