Depends on the backup method. If you backup to an image (drive/partition imaging) of then it should be fine.
Just asking...
If I backup an Xp System hard drive onto an External HDD, load Win 7 onto the original HDD and then restore, would it work?
Um, no... that is not going to work.
Are you trying to upgrade to Win7 and carry over all your user files and programs from XP?
If so... that is not the way to do it.
1) You need to back up all your user files, documents, e-mail, media files, etc. first.
2) Then you need to make a list of your hardware so that you can get the correct drivers afterwards (XP drivers will not work in Win 7).
3) Then you need to make a list of the programs you want (and find out if they are compatible with Win 7 or if there are updated versions).
4) Then you install Windows 7 and a virus scanner.
5) Copy back your user files to the correct places (docs to the docs folder, videos to the videos folder, etc. - Windows 7 keeps these in a different place to XP).
6) Then download all the new drivers for you hardware and install them.
7) Then you update Windows 7 with all the security updates.
8) Then you re-install all your programs and download new versions and install them if necessary.
Thanks for that.Seems like quite a mission.
It was just a thought but I think I'll give it a miss!!:erm:
There is an easier way. Buy a new hard drive and make it your first drive, install Windows 7 onto it and then you can dual boot between windows 7 and win XP.![]()
Or if the existing drive is big enough and has free space just resize existing partitions and create a new one to install Win7 on.

I do have a 2nd drive with Win 7 on it but my XP drive has a lot more content on,programs etc which is why I would like to have the same on my Win 7 drive but as you say the drivers won't work on Win 7.I have tried installing some of my XP apps on the Win 7 drive, but even in compatability mode don't work.
