I am looking to change my insurer for my car and household items and thought I would get some recommendations.

Please let me know who you would / would not recommend.

Thanks!

This is the one question I will not ever has an answer for.

The main question is...

Why would you want to change?

Bad experience
Slow claims process
Premium increase

the best possible policy to own is one where you read the fine print and you understand what you are covered for.

there is no such thing as "the best" insurance company. Ask 10 people and you will get 10 different answers.

Yeah after being hit by someone else for a second time I realised that my current insurance just doesn't tick all the right boxes.

I got this insurance as a cheap option when I first started working about 4 years ago but I was only interested in price, but the lack of a rental vehicle, poor communication and high excess makes me want to look elsewhere now that money isn't as big of an issue.

Try PPS if you qualify been nothing but great the 5 years I have been with them great speed, service, premiums, service and never an issue with the 3 claims I did

Do they harass you after putting in your details?
Nope they never call you, and you get real quotes. Hippo quotes are all from telesure lol

I went to there offices before and had nice chat with them etc, probably only broker that has more devs than brokers!

Anyone here using Discovery?

Nicest thing about Discovery is that you get a limited amount of business use in their standard car insurance policy. Nice to have, if you use your car for occasional work purposes.

Also use discovery. I'm paying the same as prior insurer but with cashback on fuel (yes you have to drive slowly) I'm paying 40% - 50 % of what I used to pay!

Currently with King Price and happy so far, try the ctrl app or websites where you can fill in online (Dial direct and Miway etc)

Yeah I got one of my cars with them

The Good:

After just 2 months with them I hit a pothole.
They covered everything and my plan I specifically ask for zero excess no questions asked. They assessed it. Referred me to a shop on their panel fetch my car when it was done.

The Bad.
Their rental addon does not cover the Avis Lost, Theft, Windscreen or Tyre waivers and only covers the absolute base rental fee. This will come back to haunt you in the event you do make use of the Avis rental.
The rewards are really nice but tracking your driving might make people feel unconfortable but you can save a lot if you do drive good.

Santam:

The Good:
They cover the rental waivers when you need to use the rental after a claim.
They pay out claims with minimal fuss

The Bad:
Pothole damage on my vehicle they did not want to pay. The Santam assessor made me take him to the pothole I hit and actually told me that I could have avoided it completely disregarding the fact that it was peak time and I did not see it. Wanted to reject the claim because I was on my way to work with a passenger to drop off at work too without a PDP even though I told him I don't get paid or make a profit they are family we just share petrol each week at which point he insisted that petrol share is me getting paid and it's against the law.

He also insisted to verify my story with the passenger to make sure I'm lying.

That was the bad experience with Santam but after a few complaints suddenly the claim was approved and this assessor requiring all these very specific details disappeared.

You will NEVER find the "perfect" insurer because then there will be only 1. You need to scrutinize each one. Compare quotes and look at the policy wording. Most policy wording is very vague and you find those exclusions only ever real it's ugly head when you claim not when you are paying.

I would suggest going for zero excess. You never know you might smash your car and suddenly sit with a R3500-R5000 excess just because you got a super low premium.

OLD mutual zero excess when you have home and car insurance with them.
Dotsure.co.za underwritten by oakhurst also has Zero excess.
Naked Insurance via the app is quite nice lowest excess is R1500 underwritten by Hollard.
Outsurance but ask for zero excess quote
Santam ask for zero excess quote
Momentum Insure ask for zero excess

With Old Mutual, weeks back I'm parked in my driveway and women in the complex reverses into my parking space, thinking im not there and takes bumper off and deep grooves above petrol tank.
Aveo LS 2008 Hatchback with 150k on the clock
They now want to write it off and pay 35k
