BEWARE International Data Roaming charges!!!

Doesn't this happen with other networks overseas as well? For instance, an Orange user on holiday in Canada?

Ok, it appears that I am a dumb ass for not checking before travelling with my 3G card.

All I did was to send an important contractual document (6mb) per email to a few people and waited to get feedback from them.

Who in the customer ripoff chain makes the biggest killing? Vodacom or the international provider?
 
The pricing you were ripped off for is right. This typa pricing (like sms`s).. is why I dont trust any of the telecom operators. By their own mouths they have told us they are ripping us off with their pricing and they`ll do it for as long as they are able to.

Its the evil of the corporation. Theres no such thing as "too much".

Sorry Vodacom were able to rip you off... we all know that laws are created to protect the successful crimes of the past. One day crimes against people like this will be stopped, but we need a transparent and respectable form of government to control the corporations before we can achieve that ideal.

I'd imagine the OP's bandwidth was mostly wasted on MS Windows, AV, Adobe etc; updates, too. This happens to a lot of ppl with notebooks + 3G, you jack in and everything wants to update.

The thing is that Vodacom has to buy the data from the provider at whatever they are charging and then obviously Vodacom has to add profit to make it viable. Vodacom is probably adding around 25-30% profit on this...

Yeah, ideally get a prepaid card locally and use that to access internet that way, also most hotels offer Wifi internet access or Ethernet but you may have to pay extra. Obviously not R19K extra.

Some companies also offer local dialup access points in each country.

That's one thing I love about Linux... it doesn't do all of that crap the whole time (and especially Adobe's updates which take some effort to disable).

Ubuntu checks for updates but doesn't download by default. OpenSuse 9 or one of them did, it totally nailed me once, but I was on GPRS + prepaid at the time so it didn't cost me more than R20 until I squashed the service.

Agreed on that... Windows just sucks things up, even if you've got automatic updates disabled... :sick:

On Ubuntu it's on "notify me" by default, although you can change it to automatic if you want to (no thank you....)
 
I am so sorry to see this kind of thing, 19k?! For sending mails, I have no idea what to say to make it any better.
 
Sounds more like you suffered due to the weak Rand rate to be honest. The price is high but inflated due to our weak Rand. By the looks of it you could have saved the docs on a flash drive and flew it yourself to your clients. Would most likely have been cheaper as well :)
 
Well if anybody was following the foreign media during the Beijing Olympics you would have read about numerous warnings about data usuage while roaming. This is by far a uniquely South African thing - its the foreign networks ripping us off.

In Beijing you could be charged upto R400 per MB - that was R7/$

This is insane.:eek:
It would almost have been cheaper if he got on the plane flew back, downloaded his mail and flew back again. Vodacom should put measures in place to prevent surprises like these.
