Telkom are going to upgrade the sat3 they say, they have not done such as yet.

As consumers i highly doubt we are going to feel anything regarding this.
Perhaps as country we might feel a bit less congested. But prices and bigger caps, i doubt it. Would be nice, but i wont hold my breath.
 
I am going to stop coming to this website until I hear of some good news related to Seacom.... Just spoils my day articles like this.
 
Actually, this is what Seacom means:

Telkom can no longer blame the cost of the international data, nor the cost of transferring that data to our shores for their continuous high pricing.

They are going to have to find other ways of justifying their exorbitance, and damn quickly as well. They will find this quite difficult to do because any other reasoning they come up with will in fact mean that they are contradicting themselves, because their song and dance has always been the cost of the international transmission.

One of Telkom's greatest accidental achievements, that of: making the local-only circuit available to the ADSL user via ingenious ISP's at a completely separate price; has set a pricing milestone on the actual cost of maintaining the local infrastructure that cannot be rescinded.

Telkom are under serious pressure, a pressure that would simply not exist without Seacom's arrival. And, once Telkom buckles, the public eye will be cast on those riding high on Telkom's over-priced back, the cellular operators.

Everyone is sooo bleak ... come on guys .. it only went live yesterday .. give it a few weeks .. LLU is only a problem for ADSL .. Neotel are line partners and they have no issues with exchange to Home via wireless .. So expect to see something more competitive from them I think in a short while ... then .. we all act in a way that promotes competition by moving to better products when they happen .. so that ISP's and Telkom can feel the price cuts .. more people on a service that is price savvy promotes further price cuts .. etc etc ..

The issue here is you have to vote with your wallet, you cant moan about prices while you feed the Telkom beast.. because the longer we pay Telkom, the longer they control pricing ..

Yes wireless isnt great, but it gets better every time they release a new variant, and if its a means to end and along the way you get a couple of extra gigs with a tad bigger latency .. then at least its part of a bigger picture.

These things only work if consumers stand together, and I think myBB users are a big enough group to make an impact .. perhaps we should call for a homepage link summarizing all the ISP prices so that people have a quick place to compare, and new users are informed and dont go with the Telkom leeches .. (RPM ;) )

Come on guys .. we can make them drop prices .. we just have to let our wallets do the talking

Providers are only going to drop their prices if they really, really have to. And so we now must wait for the catalyst...

Not quite, but close.

At each end of the cable is a row of optical cards in a rack. Each card can produce a different "colour" or "wavelength" of light. Each colour can transmit 10Gbps with current technology. The individual colours of light are all combined into a single fibre before being sent out the landing station on the cable. So Seacom currently has 8 colours of light going down the cable to give 80 Gbps. To get to 1.28 Tbps, they need to install 128 interface cards. So upgrades to capacity are not much more than plugging in a new interface card at each end of the cable.

The cable itself can already support 1.28 Tbps and even more in future, because all the repeaters under the sea are designed for this speed.

They can upgrade all they want but prices won't tumble, we have four cell operators and still have very high cell phone prices, why on earth would seacom give us cheap broadband?

This is not a country that sees cheap anything and it never will be(this is not negative it is a realistic view on SA). If you want cheap fast internet move to a different country.

whos the 4th cell operator? if you say ever telkom or neotel then we have 5 not 4 and these 2 are fixed and not mobile
 
again, the fact telkom already lowered their prices to seacom tarrifs a few months ago goes unheard
 
mybroadband should try getting a word from some of the ISPs about what their plans are now that SEACOM has arrived. When are they buying bandwidth from SEACOM and when; when will the customers start seeing changes in price, packages,service, etc.

That way we can get some concrete info instead thumb-sucking and speculating about everything here. So far all ISPs have kept their mouths shut on this topic, someone must get the talking now!
 
yeah if we can get some news as to what is happening with the Seacom cable from the ISP's then maybe we can get some of these guys here to keep quiet.

I will never understand how people expect change to happen the 2nd it was lit yesterday. give it a few months guys. People still have to recover the cost.

Think about it this way when you start a company would you rather start running at a loss or would you want to start paying back the loan you took from the bank and making a profit out of it.

Think like a Buisness man then you will see where they are coming from
