Beyond the SEACOM hype

The seacom story is starting give the same feeling that the Aqua - Barbie Gril song gave me a couple of years ago. "The same old bull**** on the radio again"

isp rollout

Local ISP's cannot afford to purchase seacom bandwidth at competitive pricing

smallest connection is stm1 155mbps @ over $ 110000 per month excluding the security deposit

the next problem is the local deliver that costs more than the seacom band width per meg delivered

We have a large capacity on the SEACOM cable but the local cost of delivery in all the African states is pushing up the pricing

and that is the facts
 
Neotel says that the impact of Seacom "will be immediate", yet they have not indicated any price drops? What a bunch of greedy shameless fools... Neotel could and should start the so called price war which will enable the long promised reduction in prices, yet they are too busy colluding with Telkom on how to screw the consumer over...
 
Telkom is not going to purchase any capacity on SEACOM it has just done an upgrade on the SAT3 to 340Gbit its next investment is on the WACS cable
 
Seacom pricing will only come down after 3 Years due to the ROI on the cable

remember its not just the cost of the cable but its the money that has been lent to finance the purchase of bandwidth and the equipment MPLS etc and the yearly maintance charge from seacom for the cable as well
 
I cannot see what has changed, my youtube videos still play pathetic. I have ADSL 4MB and everything is still as slow as it was the day before the cable went live. Has anyone see a speed change?

Seacom only handed over the completed cable yesterday now the companies like ourselves must take ownership of our termination and do our own compliance testing that will take around 2-3 weeks to finalize the MPLS routes etc only then will it be ready for service to the end user

Later, when that 80gbps is reaching its limit they can buy another router and double the capacity. This they can repeat until they finally have 1.28tbps.

But you ask a good question, who knows what progress will be made with fiber communications, maybe one day the Seacom cable will carry 10tbps :D

I'm inclined to agree with your 1280/80 concept, whether it's 100% accurate or not it makes sense. Lets hope they don't use this as a ploy to play the 'bandwidth demand' card the way Telkom did it.

Seacom delivery to the purchaser from a T/Div Multiplexer not from a cisco router
 
Neotel is the biggest load of BS there is on the market today, they have all the backhaul capacity and connections to seacom but not a whisper of lower prices from them???? ya right, immediately imminent. They can't even provision expansion properly.

I do not expect anything with telkom, in fact if there is any ISP out there that will bring out a service with decent service levels at a gr8 price I'd like to see telkom DIE when we all jump over. but lets face the facts, no one will even consider lowering prices when they can rip us off, I guess business is business, so maybe it is time to take to the streets and demand immediate change, with huge consequences if not done according to our wishes.

LLU is taking far too long, wtf? all these panels are just wasting our time and giving telkom money, F LLU commitee.

Seacom's return on investment has got nothing to do with our prices. Seacom have already stated their price of bandwidth months ago which was about 10 times lower than that of SAT-3. So ISP's can purchase bulk bandwidth at way lower prices now. Has the price of ADSL reduced in the last few months? No. So we are getting screwed because ISP's are buying/can buy for less but are selling to us at the same old inflated SAT-3 prices.
 
don't bother getting excited, nothing is going to start changing till way after 2010, then telscum might a very big might start let prices drop ever so slightly

Not seacom ROI but companies like ourselves that have purchased an IRU Indefeasible Right of use from SEACOM

we have to bear the costs of the purchase interest arroung 15% on the capital loaned and the equipment cost of around $ 1Mil in our case etc
 
Please note

SEACOM will only sell minimum of STM1 yes STM1 155MBPS ISP's will have to buy from ourselves neotel etc if they want chunks of DS3 E1 etc as they cannot afford the STM1 Pricing thats the facts we have the cheapest rate at the pop in JHB but the local leads are 30% more per Mbps than our wholesale pricing on SEACOM
