Big Windows 10 update launched today

Insane that they're just completely ignoring requests to be able to self-manage updates.

They can add pop ups or something if they have to, but geeve us a chaaance..
 
Just got a call from one of my clients who has a 2 Gb per month Vodacom data package. His August Vodacom bill was over R6000. Windows 10 download.

After refusing to allow me to disable further updates because he said he needed them "for security" he's now hard capped for the month, I'm guessing because build 10586 is trying to download itself.

When he asked what he could do I simply told him what I said before: "disable windows update or unplug your 3g dongle."

"No", he says.

"So top up or go without internet till December 1st".

What a gemors.
 
Set your wifi to metered connection and it won't download updates until you switch it to OFF

In the case of my client on a 2 Gb vodacom bundle: He's a curmudgeonly old bugger and simply refuses to do without windows updates. He's the type who wants to run 2 anti-viruses "just to be safe" and puts a sticker over his laptop webcam lens "for privacy".

Not a joke: he actually has a little red dot sticker over his webcam.

Website is down. Unless you have better knowledge I can tell you it is not true. In short:

1. If you have Windows 10 Home are out of luck. There is no way. As the name suggest, keep your Windows home with closed windows (meaning no Internet access). This is the only way to disable Windows Automatic Updates on this version.

2. In Windows 10 Pro version you can disable automatic updates in group policy editor. However it applies only to the Windows itself, not a Windows integrated components like Defender, Edge and other apps. The Apps appettite can be reduced on the metered connections, which can apply to WiFi and is default on RAS connection type (like older 3G modems). A new 3G/4G high speed devices use LAN interface. There are no restrictions on the LAN RJ45 port connection. And you must remember that metered connection options are ambiguous terms. By example default option on a metered connection is defined as "metered after a cap limit". Microsoft do not specify what is a cap limit. Various sources reveal that "cap limit" is a flexible term "If we decide we want to push our updates, we will do it". In other words, user has no control over updates. Even if you finally manage to bypass all tricks and lies, you will get denial of service UAC after 2 weeks of not accessing Internet. EDIT: The Webpage is wrong: option '5 'do not allow to disable automatic downloads. Option '2' is correct one.

Another error: "Select Download" tool do not prevent downloading updates. It only blocks particular update from installing again in the future.

Oh well, it worked for me. Was worth a shot. :)
 
My computer says that it is up to date but the version is still 10.0.10240.
I didn't disable anything related to Windows Update. Is the update deployed in stages like Microsoft did with the update from Windows 8.1?

You must be more specific. What exactly you did, on which Windows version and what 'worked'. As for the last one, please tell us, did it prevent constant virus definition updates? Single update can take 80MB.

Not sure tbh, it is the pro version though. I just googled a how to guide to disable the updates and it worked, regarding virus updates I keep those active. I don't like any Windows being updated, it normally breaks my system most of the times Graphics wise, not sure why, it just does.
 
I must say, I've been updating windows 10 religiously since installing it on my new laptop because there was a few bugs in the begining but after a few months, windows 10 is really solid and I'm looking forward to new features they roll out.
