Bigger and better DStv PVR here in 2013

My cancelation going in before month end.
Took a while to convince the wife to let me do it, but with the upstairs HD decoder failing on us she decided to let me have my way.

I believe the correct phrase is beta testing.

I bought the first HDPVR when it came out and it was a disaster that took the incompetent baboons at Monochoice literally years to "fix". I wouldn't touch this if it was priced at 50c including a few years subs, but then again, I've seen the light.

I watch everything I could possibly want to in better than broadcast HD quality, days after first release, with no ads, and an unlimited lifespan. ARRRRRR!

“We can place the latest hits on your PVR and give you a type of video rental experience for about, at the moment, 16 to 20 movies, and hopefully we can expand it in time to 100 and maybe more.”
They have only ever had 15 movies on Box Office...

And its due to them that we can't expand the storage space on the damn thing in the first place anyway...

STILL not fixed. I regularly have to power my HDPVR off and on again.

that, ANd the thing is sloW, sometimes it just keeps stuck on forwarding, the software is ***

On Sunday I was fast forwarding over the golf that was showing when the F1 Qualifying was on according to the EPG (WAY TO ****ING GO, MONOCHOICE) and the decoder just shut down. Dead. While it was recording the GP. I missed 2 laps because of that.

Bekker said that they are planning to double the DStv PVR storage capacity every 18 months, which will enable them to grow the number of movies which they can bring to their users.

So now I must buy a new PVR decoder every 18 months to get increased storage capacity? lmao

They can't even write decent software for the small simple model, so how exactly will they get this bigger one to work?

New, improved bla-bla-bla.

How about you allow the HDD to the upgraded on the current model?
How about you properly UAT your software you roll out on ALL models of decoders?
How about you stop shuffling channels and adding duplicate content with NO value?
How about you stop charging me for services that I do not want? Your excuse of it being bundled because you are just reselling just makes you look as though you are just a middle man adding no value yet charging me for it.

How about allowing me to use one of the myriad of very very nice decoders already on the market that has all the features already in stead of trying to re-invent the wheel and failing at it?

Yeah, must say, the software is pretty buggy! Wouldn't mind for HDD upgrade too... the reason they give for not allowing it is that you can copy the sh i t off... uhm, ever heard of hardware encryption?

The HDPVR is still in beta - it's slow, requires reboots to get it to behave, ignores key presses.
It's not a hardware issue - it's rubbish software.

It's not electrically efficient - does not sleep - uses 37.7w all the time - my i7 laptop use <1w in sleep mode and 28w when at max.
A tablet/iPad that can display HD content uses 0.01w in standby and <5w at max effort.
Eskom should lodge a complaint.

Q. Why can't we just add a external HD (USB/SATA) or upgrade the internal disk?

My pvr is about a year old now. I've had it replaced 6 times already! The guy at the shop said that the first batch of decoders always give problems and when he gave me the last one, he made sure that the serial number was of the latest batch, and so far so good.
I would say, stay away from the first batch of pvr when they do come, but I would love to have more hard drive space on my pvr, shy cant I just upgrade that?!

ok, i am calling foul play on this one.
they "reshuffle" their channels, offer "new" channels, and at the same time kill the SD/HD simulcast of mnet, movie magic etc.
so now stuff i used to record in SD (saves space, and my bedroom tv isn't hd) uses up double the space. i am now burning through my harddrive capacity at double the speed.

and then you release a bigger capacity model........ how convenient
