BitTorrent is an excellent tool for sharing large files online, which is why millions of people use it every day. In developing third world countries, however, BitTorrent usage falls far behind, mainly because the transfer speeds are not that great on low bandwidth connections. Thanks to a new BitTorrent client, funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department, this situation can look forward to positive change.

A few days ago a new BitTorrent client surfaced under the promising name BitMate. The client is developed by a group of researchers from several well respected universities who have collaborated to improve the lives of BitTorrent aficionados in developing countries.

The aim of BitMate is to drastically improve the download speeds of peers on low-bandwidth connection (5 to 20 KB/sec), to make BitTorrent more effective in places where people might need it the most. If we believe the claims of the researchers, they have succeeded in making a difference.

Looks pretty nifty... who wants to run some test for us?

"funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department" - MMmm... Now why would they go and do something like this?

haha... I also laughed at that. There must be a lot of leechers in that department! :D

Um, maybe you didn't know this... but all BitTorrent clients reveal your IP address to the other clients. :D

No need for tracking software... it is already built into all BitTorrent clients. ;)

Downloading now to try it out. With the current state of my iBurst, I hope this works.

18MB for the install file? That's kinda large for the install file isn't it? One wonders who on dialup will have patience to download that in the first place.

Ha ha ha!

I bet when installing this app it will tell you that peerguardian is incompatible with this product.

Please uninstall peerguardian.

Would you like to uninstall peerguardian now?

OR

It has special U.S 'matrix' code that will track and trace all of your online activities.

Please no!

Im to pretty to go to Guantanamo Bay detention camp!!

Still this software draws me in.....:D

sheesh, I think there are a lot of people here who have no idea how BitTorrent works! :erm:

Tried running this last night, needed a java update 1st. Works like uTorrent for me but has more (international)links built in for access to other groups. Didn't always perform all that well on BF. Nice app anyways

“Instead of wasting optimistic unchokes on high bandwidth peers, a BitMate client optimistically unchokes those peers that have a similar low-bandwidth. As a result, a BitMate client invests its scarce upload bandwidth on peers that are most likely to reciprocate.”

I would imagine that users with low bandwidth connections would be less likely to upload.

bitmate

Tried it last night, no real improvement.

Are any of you using peerblock? Is it slowing your connection down?
