On iPhone you can turn off 'last seen' on Whatsapp. I believe this setting is there for Android too.

ios also have something like this. i smaak it when my phone is off but i can still scroll my notifications/emails by switching on the display on while the screen is locked. nifty.

Does that prevent other people from seeing when you were last online? My understanding is that if you send a message to another party everyone sees when you were last online.
