Does anyone know if one can run normal GPRS internet on a BlackBerry without the BIS added? We have tried this with an older 8707v BlackBerry but we were given a service book error.

When VODACOM was contacted they said it is not possible to use any internet services on the BlackBerry handsets unless we bolt on the BIS at R59pm. We thought this sounded a bit unrealistic since if we have airtime on a normal phone and use internet, it deducts the bandwidth from the airtime you have available. Is there an APN we can enter into the BB to get normal GPRS (pay-as-you-use) internet on a BB handset?

A friend of mine is using my spare BB on Vodacom without BIS. He just surfs the internet normally and pays his R2/MB off his airtime. (Well, technically he has a contract but the concept still applies).

So it should work...

I'm sure You could get GPRS to work.. I mean even when BIS is down, the phone still shows gprs it's just in small letters.. So Im sure it still has GPRS. Same goes for 3G.. I dunno tho, I'm just guessing..

Thanks - will check it out. I'm very frustrated with VODACOM, especially if it IS possible, because then it means our "helpful" assistants aren't all that helpful ...
