Blood Pressure...

I went to the doctor the other day because I've been battling to shake a cold for a few weeks. He says my blood pressure it tending towards the high side, and that was after he did it again while I was lying down. So suddenly I have some interest in this thread.

What do you guys use to measure your BP? Is a cheapy from Dischem or Clicks adequate or are there some that should be avoided?

Just to add my 2c, I was suffering with headaches all the time, sometimes waking up with a very bad headache, eventually got myself to the doc. Blood pressure was HIGH, dangerously so, we had to get it down asap. had to go see a specialist (not sure what they called) that doc said i have hypertension and i will have to be on meds for the rest of my life, Was a shock at first.

I found out i have hypertension in my family. so i just accepted it.

I am happy to say headaches are a thing of the past for me since ive been on the meds. I'm trying to eat cleaner and i recently joined the gym to shed a few kilos. Blood pressure seems stable.

I am 31 years old.

Glad to hear that they caught it in the nick of time.

Keep in mind that headaches usually are NOT an indication of high blood pressure, you can be lucky the doctor checked your blood pressure. But it is very good that you joined the gym and is living healthier as this will be more beneficial in the long term.

This is why high BP is usually called "the silent killer".

I use the BP tester from Dischem - it is a Dischem brand.

Usually the more expensive ones have more functions, bells and whistles, but it is up to you to choose what you want. Prices range from R500 (IIRC) up to R1000.

I don't know whether the wrist BP readers are any good, but I prefer the traditional BP ones - where you fasten the cuff to just before your elbow on your arm.

Some are portable, meaning they will continue to take your BP reading during the day at regular intervals, others are tabletop units (not portable).

Thanks.

I popped into Dischem over the weekend and picked one up for R349 - I can't find the model on their website so I can't link to it. Seems to work OK, it's the upper arm cuff type, so fairly standard and dead simple to use. Basically at that price, it's a simple decision to make - one visit to the doctor and you've spent that much already. Just need to do a few readings and start to work out what pushes the pressure up and what helps bring it down now.

First two tests came up as 132/97 with pulse rate of around 70. Next two later that evening after supper, came up as 140/95 or there about.

So I do have some work to do to get it down from there. At this stage I'm trying to avoid getting into the lifetime of medication trap, and would rather find other ways of managing it.

I must get myself one of those too, this going to the doc each time is becoming too costly

My suggestion is to go to the doctor, get some medicine (for 6 months or so) and take a relaxed approach to tackling your BP issues. Remember it may take a while to accurately identify the cause(s) of your high BP. In the meantime you can control it with medicines until you find out what the real problem is, then start preventative measures to cut out the problem.

Otherwise you'll only stress when seeing your BP remaining high and not coming down.

Ok, not to sure if I'm being taken for a ride.

Went to my GP yesterday for a checkup to renew script, he took my blood pressure but in the old fashion way ( cuff with thermometer ball thing ) and said I was 170/100 ( :erm: ). I recently bought a set ( BP and Sugar ) so when I got home that night I took my bp and sugar using my electronic devices. BP was 128/68 which is what I'd expect and sugar was 7.2 ( just eaten about 30 mins before ). He's also added on another tablet ( epal ) which is supposed to help the blood vessels themselves in tandem with the beta blockers I already take.

I'm happy to take the meds but I can't believe the difference between the two readings, my BP normally sits around the 135/78 mark with the medication so it was quite a shock. I almost think he took it wrong but he's an old doc.

Had White Coat syndrome for 30 years.....
First reading at Cardio., 180. After 10 minutes dropped to 150.
Get home and its 130

yeah we had a wellness day at my company last week friday first reading 130/80 an hour later 116/68 both are still in decent range the first being slightly high and the second being slightly low

I seem to have white collar syndrome too...

Reading taken @ the doctors rooms are sky high - wore a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor and my resting BP is 100% normal.

So lately I've been checking my pressure, usually sits around the 130-135/80 mark... last night it was at 145/100... how bad is it? wife says i should go to the docs and get put on meds, im not to keen on meds, any nice natural alternatives?
