let me tell you, breaking your femur is no silly matter. my right one shattered in 3 places on saturday and its the worst pain I've ever felt. However, that being said, I would rather go through that again rather than have another catheter inserted into me!

I'm alright though. Morphine is a myth though because it doesn't work, and causes poor grammar as is visible here :)

ok, lets tarantino this issue right here, to break your femur takes some doing, im intrigued to know how?

I'm glad that you specified it was the femur. Judging from the title of the thread, it could have been much worse

Managed to break my femur, tib/fib, and split my knee joint in half once so I feel your pain.

worse than femural pain? yeah I'll post the pics of my xrays when i'm back home in a few days. I was piggybacking two people. The orthopedic surgeon cannot understand why it caved. I think it's from a hairline fracture from my fall the other week combined with a really really bad diet.

I do not want to feel your pain but ask for pethedine or dorimicum.(spelling)
Hope something helps.

i really cant even imagine your pain i have never broken a bone in my life...:erm::eek: touch wood touch wood

Second opinion? The same thing happened to me in a football match (after a very small collision) and it turned out to be a tumour in the bone called an encondroma. Don't mean to scare you, but that bone doesn't just "collapse" - did you have a bone density scan done? An x-ray can only pick up so much...

You broke your Femur and are in pain?

Broke both of mine just as I left school, I don't recall it being very painfull appart from the traction they had on my legs. Did you have a bloodtest done yet ? You can die from a Femur break as the bone marrow can get into your blood stream and cause some other condition = Death.

But enjoy the time off :p

well i'm not dead. had a full blood work done. sitting waiting to get post-op xray and hematology results. had an insane fever last night so maybe the blood was dirty. dunno. will see.

My example only happens on a femur break.

Your Muscles around the Femur is some of the strongest muscles in your body. When your Femur breaks the muscles because of the tension, pulls the knee part of your leg upwards to your hip. This forces your femur sections (now broken in 2) to push into tissue and can rupture veins. Now the bone marrow inside your femur then leaks out into your tissue and can be absorbed into the blood stream. There is a name for that condition I just can't recall it now.

That is also the reason a femur break is put on traction. The tension of the muscles make it impossible for the bone to be put back in the right spot without it.

aha,

Found it: Fat Embolism

Fat embolism is a complication that occurs from long bone fractures (usually the femur). The marrow fat escapes the bone and enters the blood stream traveling to the lungs and brain and causes acute respiratory failure, altered mental status, skin changes, low platelets. There is no specific treatment just management of the symptoms and the diagnosis is made clinically, there are no specific tests for it.

Well i can certainly write books about pain... had my fair share.
Also broke my femur, and the bone in the process moved forward shattering my knee into pieces... yup... pieces... had to sign amputation forms before they operated on me to try and rebuild / recover my knee. Nothing like waking up trying to remember where are you, is your leg ok, you cant feel it. They saved it but I had to go through many other operations including knee-joint release operations. Waking up and your knee is on a bending machine to prevent scar tissue from forming / bonding inbetween the joints.

Snapping a femur is insane, there is only one pain medication that could keep it under control and that was pethadine... that stuff is from heaven. Insanely addictive but sooooo awsome and nice hmmmmm.
