Building under construction collapses in George

They were probably getting targeted - and not in a good way. Their facebook and linkedin pages are also gone.
 
I was inside the Investec Building when the scaffolding collapsed as it was compromised due to the weight of unmounted marble slabs.
It sounded like a massive water flood and the dust made it difficult to breath and I probably still have some PTSD from the broken bodies lying around after the event.
This event in George looks to be a million times worse!

When I had my house built (in 1985) the municipal building inspector was on site at every stage - as well as the Transnet building inspector (yes, I was a Transnet employee at the time - he even measured the roof trusses upon delivery to the site before the contractor was allowed to proceed with the project!).

The garage addition was done in 1995 (I had since left Transnet), and further additions to my home were done in 2006 with the same inspection intervals - done by different municipal officials.

So this was in effect for more than 20 years - that I can vouch for from my own experience. And this was valid for every single building within the Metro.

Yeah i dont doubt your experience at all but it would seem different metros or municipalities do things differently, its why im interested in knowing what the baseline requirements written in law are. Some others have chipped in with info that does clarify this somewhat.

Lol, I wouldn’t trust the municipality with that.

Again, generally speaking, drawings are checked and approved by consulting engineers for whoever the approval authority is at local or national level and who are independent of the design.
 
eTV news at 8pm had a live interview with Dr Imtiaz Sooliman (Gift of the Givers). Based on his years of earthqauke disaster experience, he says he does not think there will be any more survivors. The last was found at 1:30 this morning.

The search will continue, but shift to heavy equipment to lift and cut the 3,000 tons of concrete slabs.

I think he can be excused on this one as basically everyone is just observing the same thing about the columns/pillars.

Ah it seems your studio is lot more demolished than I thought. Today is not going to be a good day then

Maybe try again tomorrow when there has been some recovery
