Building under construction collapses in George

Agree 100%
But after all is said and done I hope the property developers are not greedy and go ahead and build another building on this cemetery where so many have lost their lives.
The government should compensate those at financial loss here and decalre that erf as sacred and erect a memorial of some sorts like Trump did with 9/11
Interesting.

Why do you think the government needs to compensate the families and not the developers/ planner/ engineers?

I don't think that's how it worked with 9/11
Different country. And the USA government just prints trillions of dollars when they want to. So easy to compensate everyones families easily.

Also not a construction related event. More a terrorist related event.

I think the contractors and engineers etc are liable and their professional insurances will cover it.
Yup that should cover most expenses, but I am more concerned about the erf afterwards. It should be a memorial site to remember all that have left us due to this horrific incident.

I am more concerned about the erf afterwards, it should be a shrine to remember those fallen heroes

Unfortunately this is South Africa and the landowner can do whatever he wants with the land.

My honest opinion is the block of flats will be rebuilt and have residents before the guilty party will be prosecuted.

As an ECSA registered Civil Engineering Professional, I would first check the structural design, then check the quality control records on the construction.

There was no mention of the developers agent or supervision consulting engineer. This would be someone who would check the quality control (ie type and amount of rebar, concrete strengths, etc)

Not so sure about that. Once the investigation is done and all evidence collected I suspect the owner of the land will be free to do with it as he pleases.
It will all depend on what the investigation finds and who ends up being accountable and liable and then commercials around everything.

I don't think that accountability for this incident has any bearing on what happens to the property, two unrelated things. But then I'm not a lawyer. Of course the information gathering could be dragged out as long as possible for some or other motives, but I can't think what such may be.

I guess I'm moving to George in a soon to be built affordable flat at an even lower price. People from George are nice.

Edit: and the quality will be good since they won't want a second disaster
