Buying a UPS

We have one of those APC units here at the office. They're very good, had it for 5 years - the battery crapped out a few months ago but got a replacement battery for under R800.

Just try to never run the batteries down completely, if you do this often it's going to seriously shorten the lifespan of the battery.

Thanks for the tip - what do you power off it at the office and for how long?

6 office PCs and screens and a switch. Though most of the time there are only 2 or 3 PCs powered on. Load is usually always between 150W to 200W sometimes a little more.

Only need to run them for a about 2 minutes while we switch over to the generator. LCD says we have about 25 - 30 minutes based on that load.

EDIT: Apologies, I'm talking about the BR1500, we have the BR900 upstairs which runs two PCs and screens, a laser printer, router and 24 port switch. Also only run for 2 minutes while we switch over to gennie. Don't exactly know what the load is though.

awesome - sounds like a great unit. I also like the fact that the batteries are very easily replaceable and don't need to involve having to take the unit in

Hey peeps, just wanna ask if this - APC Back-UPS 700VA, Line Interactive, 4 Power Outputs - would do me ok for shutting everything down properly? Calculated that my system only uses 150W idle and 400W at load so it seems this would do the trick right?

Which one is that? Link?

Just make sure it has a USB management port, otherwise you'll have to manually shut down everything when the power fails.

Here is a nice layman's explanation of the different ups systems for you guys.

Anyone retrofitted a car or bigger deep cycle battery into a UPS?

I have a large rack mounted 3500VA UPS. All the batteries are pretty much pap and I need to replace them. I was wondering if this was a good idea to replace them with 1 or 2 of the larger capacity batteries to provide light for longer periods of time.

I would like to run selected lights, tv and dsl router off of it.

UPS for a Fish Tank

Hi All
Any ideas for a UPS for a fish tank. Pumps and filters are total about 60W. So i think a 600W will last about 10 hours.
Modified vs. Pure for small pumps?

If the charger is big enough , then sure, but I highly doubt it.
