Buying graphics cards off eBay?

the GTX260 is $230 and HD4870 is $175!
TAX is like 20% and you pay at post office

I've ordered my XFX 9800GT several months ago off Ebay, got it for R1100 brand spanking new. Paid no import duties, I told the sender to send as gift - thus you don't pay any import taxes ;)

$100 = R820 give or take...

it is but then $40 for shipping and insurance :)

I always compare a product with a price reference from one of our stores, say Sybaritic as i think they're quite competitive! If the total cost of the product on Ebay and shipping works out MUCH cheaper, then absolutely (depending what it is ofcourse), otherwise it may be cheaper to just buy it locally!

I find Smaller items like Ram, Video cards, sound cards etc works out cheaper to import on Ebay!, however you take the risk as there will be no warranty. I certainly am happy with the few things I've imported!

If the difference was up to R500 I would get it locally but with such a difference it would be crime not to import!

Bought mine off ebay, Sapphire HD 4870 1G Ram and saved alot of money. I think the guy also sent it as a gift as I only paid VAT on it. Just make sure its posted with tracking.

It should be fine buying off ebay. If the seller has a 100% rating with over 2000 sales, then I really highly doubt they're a scammer.

I've bought numerous items off ebay (Australian and American) and I've had no problems as of yet.

+1

Hi guys,
I am in the market for a HD4870 512/1GB and the best local price I have found is R 2 800 form wantitall.co.za
But I can get one off eBay, NEW, for only R1555 inc express mail to SA!
They guy has 100% seller rating so cant be a scam :)

Are you guys against buying from other countries?
Thanks

If the guy has a long standing history and good feedback go ahead. Bear in mind that there may be customs VAT charges and lack of local warranty are issues too, but other than that, give it a go if you don't mind the risk.

Perhaps i didn't phrase it correctly - Warranty is pointless as the cost of sending it back to get replaced becomes an issue.

How much did you pay to get your card swapped?

about 40 us:(
but even with that the card was cheaper by over 2 grand.
btw first time in 8-9 years that i have had to actually send anything back for warranty so i like those odds:)

Well did you also take into account customs x 1.10 and then x 1.14 to get your final amount?

So let's say something is 80 dollars when customs get it they will use this:

80 x 1.10 88 dollar x 1.14 = 100 odd dollar.

Importing vga cards is not worth the trouble if you ask me, a few places have the 4870 for 2k so saving 200 bucks seem pointless to me not to mention customs will make up the saving.
