Cancelling Telkom internet, keeping email

Our friend is paying per month. Once she has had her first account I will update. It's possible the paying monthly rate differs from the annual rate. After her landline and ADSL were cancelled, they kept billing her for data. Go figure... So now she has enough credit to last for about 18 months of email only.

There are some in Telkom that firmly believe Telkom is deliberately trying to shut down copper services. Yet Openserve says it is not.

Talk about throwing away the bird in hand for the proverbial two in the bush. By neglecting us copper customers they are basically throwing away our custom in the hope that they can then move into the mobile space and make money like the big boys. They are moving from a market where they have no competition into one with fierce competition.

I have already given up on Telkom mobile because of very poor connectivity and coverage. Chances are if I cancel the landline Telkom will loose my custom altogether and are unlikely to get it back. I also don't want to move to fibre because I am not a streaming movie fan. And I am about to cancel the landline because of the only reason I am keeping it, email, has been removed by telkom themselves.

Firstly my email was not working for 6 months last year. Got an apology because their server had serious problems and the like. It worked for a bit this year and now it is not working again. Their password reset tool is not working.

Fortunately I had moved most of my essential email subscription to gmail and my own domain account. I was essentially keeping the Telkom essentially just to see which other subscriptions I had coming to that email and migrate them. I even phoned in and changed my Telkom accounts email to a gmail, so I could receive their statements!!

Hi anyone 'out there' who can assist.
I have come in and been reading this historical discussion.....I have a story which follows some similar lines.
My name is John and this is my story....

I moved home to rented accommodation, about a year ago - Alberton to Edenvale.....Cancelled the Telkom landline and ADSL (which I had just been able to reconnect to after a 47 day hiatus in which 2 technicians who were called out , couldn't resolve and one who gave correct advice, but wasn't able to action it because 'the guys in the back office' had to do the work remotely and which for whatever reason, they simply , at the time, couldn't and didn't.
I also logged 14 reports of the issue to them, & the various call-backs and many other non-call-backs, just never got to the bottom of, until I one day, 'stripped my moer' as is quaintly put and actually visited their fancy 'campus' in Pretoria and threatened physical harm [which in retrospect wasn't the wisest course of action, because I was refused entry to the premises, but did, in a roundabout way, get attention and ironically, within a couple of hours, resolution to the problem].....It took a senior manager to issue an instruction to a technician and in the space of a 15minute telephone conversation, the issue was dealt with and fixed.....Remotely.....There was no smoke and no mirrors and no magic, so what was it that all the other 'back room techies' and the two who visited me, leaving, scratching their heads and offering nothing else (although, in fairness, one of them did call a couple of days later to follow up, but on hearing that the problem was ongoing, he just suggested that I go to a Telkom store).....What was it that needed doing.....In my opinion, the WILL to get things right.

But that's just some background.

In the course of the aforesaid line cancellation, I was advised by the nice 'Tech Lady' who facilitated the cancellation, which was done late on a Friday afternoon, that I'd need to set up a 'Stand Alone' e-mail facility, or I'd lose all my e-mail history.....She informed me though, that she could not do that for me & that only the Sales Department (who has knocked off by then (they do so, promptly at 5pm.....I have on two or three occasions, been on the line with a consultant, and literally, on the stroke of 5, the line goes dead !) & only get back to work on Monday morning) could set this up......I called Monday morning to make the request & eventually spoke to a person who said that it was too late to make this happen and to retain the mail history......Apparently something to do with a 24 or 48 hour delay or something similar.....I begged, I pleaded, I tried to rationalise....To no avail......I lost the history and seemingly there was no going back....Because the 'start' button was pressed on Friday, the clock was ticking and the 24/48 hours had elapsed, in which to request the initiation of the stand alone facility.

I duly got the stand alone thing set up (at a monthly cost of something like R17,50 and was back in business (sans the history)......All was fine for about 4 months and then one day, again, mysteriously, I was unable to SEND e-mails. I could and still can, RECEIVE, but the send just keeps on failing......I have logged faults, I have spoken to tech people, (both remotely and in-store), but despite re-setting of passwords and outgoing server facilities etc, I am unable to send mail......I have been informed that Telkom does not carry mails out from this type of facility (HUH ?), despite that they had done so for the 4 months that I referred to a little earlier......I have a RAIN wireless contract for my Data, so have all of that in place.....The telkom tech folks tell me that I must get RAIN to handle the carrying out of my mail.....Ummmm, they don't do this....Just provide the facility and the Data. (I have called RAIN, twice, on the offchance that they can assist, both time told that they can't help, although 15 days or so, ago, one RAIN tech lady did offer a call back form a 'senior tech' person......Still waiting for that call.

I am now at the 'sharp end' of my issue......PLEASE, someone tell me what can be done.
I don't know how to take this further.
I have set op other e-mail facilities, so options are in place for communication, but I really would like to get this particular matter resolved and WORKING !.....Without having to shake the tree on their campus.

Just use the free tiers.

To Milano.....Thanks for the advice and link.....I need to make a confession....I am a pleb when it comes to setting this sort of thing up....'Old Dog....Old School'. ....Can I still use my Telkom facility in going the Amazon route, please ?....It's the Telkon ID that I want to preserve.

To everyone else & Speedster....My apology for the small book I produced....I understand that the stuff I found pertinent and frustrating doesn't grab the attention of others.....I was just looking for assistance & maybe got carried away.

Maybe. Been so long since I did initial setup. There are various options, can't recall all those options now. Will try check once I'm at the PC. Can't recall if you had to own the domain or whether it also worked for ISP domain email. I actually think it did. Maybe someone can comment in the interim.

Any assistance appreciated. It just strikes me as odd (and others have ventured the same to me), that Telkom is happy to provide this 'stand alone' service, but as an incomplete one.....Only carrying inbound mail but not outgoing.

There are several posts on these forums about keeping Telkom email as a standalone service, and the problems with just getting that done. There are also posts on problems with Telkom email itself going pear-shaped from time to time, or frankly, this year, very frequently. I am changing mine to gmail and outlook.com (Microsoft's gmail or free email).

Here are some of the other threads:

Good Morning to the group.
I did post some queries prior & ended up not being able to pick up responses, so I'm trying again now.
I do have a Telkom 'Stand Alone' e-mail facility (Cancelled my old landline & ADSL facility because I moved)....Now renting premises & just needed the Telkom e-mail.....I did get it set up & it ran fine for a couple of months.....Then out of the blue, I stopped being able to send mail....No problem receivig (apparently), but despite MANY calls to their tech dept and several visits to Telkom stores, I am just told that they don't carry mail out with the Stand Alone facility....Is this a bunch of Hooey ?
The common consensus fron their 'techies' is that I need to get my Wi-Fi provider to give me an outgoing facility.....I am with RAIN.....They don't DO this !!!
What do I do, please ?.....I'm in the same position as an earlier correspondent.....I have years of contacts and don't want to go through the issues of changing to someone like G-Mail.
To Bwana .....The cost of R152.25 I'm sure is an annual one.

OK.....I have just picked up another thread & read comments by RonSwanson, MidnightCaller, Argh and others....All of your collective comments and advice points one way.....Telkom is u/s & I'll need to convert.
I do have a G-Mail facility....To be honest, I don't like the format of their page....I much prefer the Outlook layout....I find it easier to work with.
Someone commented a while back that G-mail could be 'converted' to an Outlook format....I went online & found instructions, but despite repeated efforts, I just didn't come right.....Any advice, please ? There seems to be something I'm missing.

You want to keep using Outlook but using a gmail address?

  • I also concluded that the problems with Telkom email had become so bad, that I had to get another email address, and move all my emails to the new address. I am doing this over several months, because it is a big and annoying undertaking.
  • I also prefer Microsoft's Outlook.com to Gmail. I have found outlook.com to work flawlessly on my computer & smartphone. The only problem I had was getting it to work as a POP version, so I just use the IMAP version. The advantage is I can see emails on my phone wherever I am. To save emails that I want to keep on my computer, I create local folders in Thunderbird, which I am using as the email programme on my computer, and move the emails I want to keep into those. I really only use the gmail address as an alternative address to the outlook.com one, because Microsoft requires an alternative contact option in case something goes wrong.
