I recently purchased an iPhone 5, which is definitely compatible with LTE. Even though I am well within what Telkom says is their coverage area for LTE both at home and at the office(respectively Kenilworth and Cape Town CBD) I can only connect to 3G and there is no sign of the LTE network. I haverepeatedly been into Telkom or contacted them via email or telephone and they simply express surprise but can offer no help. Any suggestions?

iPhone 5 does not support LTE on the 2300Mhz band i.e. TDD

Hi redbaron

The LTE service will not work on your iPhone as our LTE offering works on the 2300MHz frequency (the iPhone device does not support this).

Question,

Should Telkom get spectrum in 2.6GHz range, will Telkom be moving existing LTE to the 2.6GHz frequency or will Telkom always use 2.3GHz for LTE?

Just for future purpose.....

No LTE available in Cape Town CBD & Kenilworth

According to Telkom both the above areas have LTE cover. I have not even picked up the LTE network, let alone managed to connect and use it. This has been the case since my contract started about a week ago. Telkom cannot assist. The "assistance" is limited to "you should be able to connect". Well, I can't. The iPhone 5 is LTE enabled, WiFi is off and only a 3G connection is available. Is Telkom misleading customers re availability of LTE or is there some other explanation?

iPhone 5 does not support LTE in 2300MHz which Telkom uses, so you will need the iPhone 5S to use LTE.

That is even MORE distressing. I REPEATEDLY asked whether or not the iPhone 5 was LTE enabled. Telkom REPEATEDLY assured me it is and that I could use the 5GB on the LTE network. To this day in their emails they implicitly acknowledge this as their only response is that the phone should connect. The advertisement for the offer iro the cellphone option I selected also makes express reference to LTE being provided. Are you sure that your reply is correct? It's not that I doubt you, but if it's true I'm dealing not with misleading advertising but good old fashioned fraud.

Here is a quote from just the last correspondence received from Telkom:

Your phone is LTE enabled and you should be able to pick up the LTE network with that SIM CARD. However when you are connected to the LTE network it shows 4g not LTE.

Kind Regards [name removed by me]

I mean for sure, you now raise a correspondence issue with Telkom, but take it up with the company rep on the original thread. I feel for you, but there is no way your device will connect to the Telkom LTE network.

That should hopefully mean an awesome free upgrade from the 5 to the 5S as it seems Telkom flat out lied to you

THEN WHY DID TELKOM REPEATEDLY TELL ME THAT THE PHONE WOULD WORK ON THE LTE NETWORK BEFORE I SIGNED THE CONTRACT? HERE IS, BY WAY OF ONE EXAMPLE, IN THE LATEST EMAIL FROM TELKOM OF A CLEAR INDICATION THAT I WAS TO PUT IT KINDLY MISLED:

Dear Mr [name removed]

Your phone is LTE enabled and you should be able to pick up the LTE network with that SIM CARD. However when you are connected to the LTE network it shows 4g not LTE.

Kind Regards ,[name removed]

I assume that Telkom will provide me with an iPhone 5S on the same terms as I have now cancelled my Vodacom contract, requested a number port and sit up s*** creek without a paddle. I KNEW I was making a mistake dealing with Hellkom. Just like the old days. Clearly a leopard cannot change its spots.

Hi, the Telkom store now tell me that it is the nanoSIM that is the problem and that they will cut a microSIM to fit the iPhone 5 and I will then be able to connect to the LTE network. I am sceptical. Is this possible/correct?

Does not matter what sim you use. As stated previously, the iPhone 5 is not compatible with the frequency used by telkom mobile for LTE

no matter what you do, you cannot use a radio to pick up tv channels. Same principle phone cannot tune to that frequency.

Thanks, as I said, I was sceptical - to the point of incredulity. I have just wasted my time and returned from the Telkom store & I can confirm it does not work. I can also confirm that the iPad also doesn't work with Telkom LTE. A word of warning to forum users: Telkom are flogging cellphones (mis)representing that they work on their LTE network when this is simply not true.
