I can get one at R7,000.00 - and this seems to be L lens sharp, without the build quality.

Also guessing if I get bored in a year, it won't drop 30% in price and be fairly easy to sell?

And price wise ?

Seems Orms is R9,300.00

R7000 new? It's a steal. Grab it before it disappears.

They hold their value quite well - few people want to part with them.

Nah - used.

Cheapest I can find it new is Orms at R9,300.00. So R2,300.00 off

So now you know what it's worth second-hand. They don't lose too much value, and if you buy one in a good condition second-hand, you can probably sell it for about the same if you take good care of it (or more, if prices go up in general).

I'm looking forward to it actually - I bought my camera and a single lens in 2010 with the intention of buying more lenses as I go along. It's been 4 years and the only one I've bought was a cheap 28mm prime as a my walk around, so I'm severely limited in what I can take with a 70-200 and a 28.

Reviews are very positive and a used lens at 25% less than an Orms price seems decent, as often lenses don't seem to drop that much

I couldn't recommend this lens more if I tried. After my 40D + 24-105L was stolen, I got a 50D kit, rented both the 24-105L and 17-55 f/2.8, and used them both extensively on trips. I had a really really hard time deciding between the two.

The 17-55 2.8 is superb - get it if you can.

Which did you pick in the end?

24-105L. In part because I already had a ultra-wide lens, in part because I know like having the extra range on the long end (I had decided to get rid of my 70-300 as I wasn't using for anything other than the occasional moon pic), and in part because I thought at some point in the not too distant future, I'd buy the 17-55mm 2.8 too. Of coruse, I never did, and then the 5D3 came out with a proper AF system...

And you found you had a lens you didn't have to sell… :)

Yea I considered a used 24-105 or 24-70 or something - but I really need the wide angel for a 7D.

Indeed, although I had two to sell after all, and as we saw, the 17-55mm wouldn't have lost much value.

I had to sell the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4. The 10-20mm lost a fair bit of value due to the f/3.5 coming out, but I was still able to sell it for fairly close to retail at the time. Ditto the 30mm - they released the new one and the old one's new price dropped from around ÂŁ400 to ÂŁ250. I sold mine for ÂŁ200 though, so that's not too bad.

Collected it yesterday - so all sorted :)

I haven't had much time to play as I only got the lens yesterday, but judging by everything I've read it's a cracker of a lens. Also agreed on the price - I got it R7,200.00 as the guy had drive our and meet me, but he included the hood. I've seen the odd one for sale and that is the rough price

I got back late so there was nothing to take of - rushing home soon to take a few of whatever I have (probably cats) ;)

EDIT : Geez that hood alone is over R500.00 - so everything is around R10,000.00 for the price. Need to insure

That's a great lens, and I've had my eye on it for quite some time. Guess it will have to wait for a super great deal like you got, or for the Christmas bonus.

Enjoy it.

If you're looking for opportunities to use it, try during the golden hour, or as it's almost dusk. The wide aperture and sharpness should really shine then.

Yea I just got in and a little dark :/

I snapped one or two arb things, which I'll post now
