Hi all, I know some of you have this one, also know as Rebel XTI. I saw some good reviews on it, but if some of you have one, please share some info? I want to buy at B&H, even if I import it through right channels, it's till cheaper. I will just not have a Warrantee, as it comes with a USA warrantee only. I wonder if I can buy a warrantee from Canon SA. Thanks all.

Love it - in fact I've just bought a second one (this time a XTi beanded one) not too long ago from B&H - eta Tues/Wed. :)

Will you let me know how it is? Please? I wish I had the moola now.How did you import it? Did someone brought it over, or is it through customes and stuff? Would like some first hand experience on that too, as that will be the route I'll follow. Thanks.

Let you know how the camera is? Its a great camera - its my second one remember? As soon as my EOS 400D gets repaired I'll have two at my disposal. :D

You're going to want to replace that kit lens with something else asap. Doesnt have to be canon - Sigma makes some great lenses and I've heard good things about Tamron too.

I've got my parents hand carrying the Rebel (and a new lens) next week - no shippng, no customs, no problems. :)

Yes I remember now. So did they buy it in the B&H shop? And what did they pay, price on their site+ tax? I mean USA Tax. And what about warrentee? Not worried about that?

I purchased it online and had it delivered to them - as it was out of state there was no sales tax.

They had it looked at by a professional photographer there to check for any obvious defects - otherwise if there are problems I'll either pay for them myself or ship it back stateside. The body that would have cost me R7,799.00 here (SA Camera) cost less than r3700 (incl shipping to the fossils) from B&H.

Two there for the price of one here. Disgusting isnt it. :(

But things like warranty are null and void are they? unless you ship it back to the states?

I am looking at getting a 400D from B&H as well, but just checking everything before i make the jump.

As far as I know that is correct.

hmmmmm, aggg buying for nearly half the price kinda makes that a risk worth taking i reckon...

It does indeed :D

You might want to enquire about the possibility of a worldwide warranty - I bought one a few years back with a camcorder I got from them.

Okay, so when you payed for the camera by Credit card, did you pay vat? Or does one pay vat here, together with the customs? As far as I know lenses are free of customs charges, just vat. I don't know the usa, but is minisota also out of that state? Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I don't know. I hve friends that stay there, and sometimes they know of people coming this way. So then the shipping won't be much?
I saw a bundle at makro yesterday, with a 400d, photo printer, 2 gig mem card, photo paper and a photo program too, for R8999, but if you buy the camera alone was also R8999, with a kit lens. On the lenses I havent decide yet, but I will have a look at the sigma ones. What lenses did you buy, and why?

OK - because I sent the camera out of state there was no sales tax. B&H wont add sales tax if you ship internationally but customs on this side might. As long as the people you know dont live in NY State then B&H wont charge tax (thats thanks to the Internet Tax Freedom Act).

My lenses: apart from the kit lens I have a Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro IF Autofocus and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens - next week I'll be adding a Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Autofocus

The 50mm is a must have imo - its fast and cheap :) I'm really impressed by the sigma too. Compact and versatile.

Just curious, why one the sigma 28-300 lens, and the new canon 70-200? Isn't the sigma better, I new to lenses, so thats for the stupid question.

Just out of interest bwana, since you're all powerful and knowledgeable about these things :)

Would a 350D do the job for someone just getting in to photography? My budget MIGHT be a little constrained.

The canon gives you a maximum aperture of f4 throughout the lens' range - the sigma varies from 3.5 (wide angle) to 6.3. The Canon offers much better over all construction (weather proofing) as well as USM focusing.

Sure - great little camera. Rumour has it there is a 450D on its way - if thats true then there might be price cuts on the horizon. That said . . . 350D looks like a great camera - here's a side-by-side comparison for you. As you can see it is a little more involved than just a few more mp. :)

Thanks bwana. ToxicBunny, I was also thinking to buy the 350d, because the difference is not that much, if I remember correct, it's pixels, 400d have a bigger lcd screen, and it has that built in sencor cleaning. So I though that to waste money now to buy the 350d, and the 400d doesn't cost that much more.

Insurance

Insurance? Sure - I pay about r30 pm for mine.

Can one get insurance for just the camera, cause I dont have insurance on my household goods, or my car. R30 a month isn't much. May I ask where you insured it? And lastly, if I bring the camera in the way you do, without customs and that, can't they say that it's done illegal, and not pay out?

I had mine specified on my household insurance - not sure about other methods.

I've claimed on laptops that have been imported. Just keep the receipts.
