Canon EOS 7D introduced

I must be completely missing why this is a xD rather than a xxD

It's a higher spec camera. What I don't get is, why 7? What's the significance of the number 7? I kinda expected something like this to pay homage to the EOS 3 and be called EOS 3D. Was there ever a EOS 7 film body?

What confuses me more is that speculation about the 7D has been rife for a good three years now. What made people expect it to be called 7D?

Pentax did the same thing. They had K10D, then K20D, then wham! K7D. Why? Again, the guys on the Pentax forums have been talking up a storm about this K7D beast for years now, and again, why 7?

Or is this maybe just a sign that the camera manufacturers are, in fact, paying attention to what the fans say?

What is it that the fans are saying? I'm hitting the shops today but even if it was on the shelves I'm not sure it offers me enough of what I need. When I go looking to replace my 400D however. . .

I am still leaning towards the 5D mkII, but if I had the money I think the 7D is the perfect backup camera.

All in all I kinda like what the 7D offers. I think I'm the kind of consumer they are targetting with the camera. I'm not too interested in spending R25k for the 5DMKII but at around R13-R16k I would take what the 7D gives. While technically the FF cameras are superior, its still inferior in the eyes of my wallet. Sure a full frame 7D would be even better!

The one thing I like about the 7D is the flash controller. Bye bye R3k STE-2!

Seems the 7D will ship to retailers next week in US so then the reviews will be coming in fast.

At this stage I am very very tempted to import myself one.

It's a nice cam, but I would get the 5DII. I want the lowlight, and be able to use the 17-40/16-35 to its full ultra-wide potential.

Nice spec's but too bulky for my needs.

Yes, full frame, can't beat it that regard. Compare it to the 1DsIII however, and it's a very attractive option.
For telephoto sports & wildlife, and as a backup, this is my temptation.

I'm not sure why the 7D is worth $700 more than the 50D.
