can't stream with my 4Mbps line

Hi guys,

I have switched to adsl after having issues with my telkom mobile 3G. I even cancelled my dstv so I can be able to pay a 4 Mbps business uncapped. The installation has been done and i started with a 2 Mbps line for testing purpose then I switched to Mbps. When I check on speed test my speed is 3.45 Mbps down and 480 Kbps up and 12 ms for the ping. it seams quite ok but i cannot stream live tv on website like sportlemon.tv or any other live tv website. it is buffering every 8 seconds what is a problem for me. My 3G was giving me 1.5Mbps down, 240 Kbps up and 89 ms but i could stream those channels. how come a 4 Mbps line is giving me issues ? I just do not understand what i am doing wrong. My 4 Mbps gives me the same experience as the 2 Mbps that i tested before. do not understand this.

My line is managed by telkom and my internet account come from a friend who resell IS accounts.

do you guys know what can be wrong ?

also, how can I get my upload speed to increase with telkom ? at work my line is 10 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up how do they do ?

It's the "account from a friend" that's the problem. More than likely he is giving you a login of someone else's account as they can do two concurrent connections. Problem with that though is the speed is shared.

Second problem is he probably gave you a 2 star account.

Rather sign up for that free Web Africa Gig and test again.
 
ok. let me talk to him about the 2 starts accounts that you are talking about. free web africa Gig ? i do not see it on their website

As per Chevron it's highly likely the actual IS account is your problem. On ADSL the upload and download speeds are "Assymetric" so you get more download speed than upload and that's why the technology is mainly aimed for home use though businesses can use it. At your workplace they might be running on something like fiber which allows one to have symmetric speeds thereby allowing faster transmission of eg outgoing mail with big attachments.

I have ordered a 1 GB account with webafrica. in case it is fast, do you think i should stay with them ? no shaping or throttling?
one of my other friend who also use a 2Mbps account from the same guy manages to download up to 1.5 Tera per month. This is why i wanted his accounts because you are not limited to anything. I know i am not a downloader but a streamer. I hope webafrica will not throttle my speed after a certain time should I sign with them
 
WA capped accounts also use the IS backbone. I have a 15GB account and it's blazingly quick no matter what the time of day or protocol used. I prefer it over my Vox account atm.
 
Try an Afrihost 1gb as well.
It sounds to me like your line is shaped or shared as Chevron said.

I'm currently using Web Africa Business uncapped as it's the best streaming account I've used so far and I've tried about 5 different ISPs so far.

A proper IS account, meaning not screwed with by the ISP, is probably the best in SA. VOX capped has also been good to me.

yessssss i saw it from the ISP provider's (my friend the reseller) control panel. it was average 50 Gigs per day. This is even the reason why I went for it because I watch 4 to 5 hours (evening) per day of streaming and 10+ hours per day for friday, saturday and sunday. I think this will be heavy in term of data consumption and do not want a stupid restriction after 110 Go like what i read on mweb.

That 100 is only for the cheap ass MWEB 4Meg. The premium 4Meg is 400GBs.

I think there is a bit of confusion here.

1.5 TB is most certainly not capable on a 2Mbps line. The most you could possibly get running it 24/7 would be around 500GB down.

Maybe the person meant that that type of account (at a higher speed) is capable of that.
 
@DrJohn: I will talk to him to find out more because i saw it from his control panel on the computer. may be it was the total for all his clients .

@chevron: so you think streaming tv for 4 to 5 hours during the week and 10 hours weekends will be less than 400 GB down per month ?

That sounds more likely.

Because you can do the maths, at full speed (round to 200KB/s) on a 2Mbps line we have:

200KB x 60 seconds = 12,000KB per minute
12,000KB x 60 minutes = 703.13MB per hour
703.13MB x 24 hours = 16.48GB per day

Yes, that is similar to our usage and it's more like 150gb.
We streamed most of the day yesterday for around 5 gb usage.

I'm sorry I just cant seem to compute how a 2MB account (downloading at 220kB/s) can achieve 50gigs a day.
My 4MB pulls about 1.5gigs an hour, running this flat out for 24hrs only achieves 36gigs.

Sorry, I'm not trying to discredit you in any way but doing the math it just doesn't seem possible.

EDIT: Did not see Dr John has already covered this, my bad.

I have 2 people at my place that each stream that much and we get to 250GBs per month.

Go for a Afrihost Business account.
