Capped ADSL is making a comeback

Not saying it's the case currently with what you're experiencing, but sometimes people forget that there are occasionally other links in the chain as well. Quite often the drop in speed is at the server side.

I've had plenty of situations where one download would be chugging along at ~10kbps, but starting a second download for something else from another server would use full line speed while absolutely nothing speed related really happens with the first download.

That being said, I've also had times where downloading something to my desktop would not pass double digits kbps, but downloading the same file from the same server to my VPS in the UK would come in at several 100 Mbps. Syncing from my VPS to desktop would then be full line speed again. So either someone somewhere limits those connections, or the direct link takes a slow path somewhere.

All I'm saying, more than one place for things to lose speed.

I think this is where the "best effort" comes in regarding ADSL.

The big guys are forcing us to capped accounts but it will back fire on them. I have just moved from Afrihost to - dare I say it Telkom my pet hate company and still hate them for what they have done, or more to the point what the haven't done for Internet. 2 years back during the day (was Mweb then) my torrents used to download on my 4mb uncapped ADSl at around 150 - 300KB/s. I left Afrihost last month at 6 - 15kB/s download during the day, even tunein radio buffered. I am a 120GB on average downloader per month so not really abusing it. Telkom yesterday was downloading at 150KB/s - 350KB/s even saw a 400KB/s for 10 seconds and that was at 3pm on a Friday. I am guessing Mweb is doing the same forcing us to go to the more expensive capped plans for speeds we had 2 years ago. I saved R100 doing the move for a better service - never thought I would say this but telkom uncapped is good ahhhh still hate the bas*&%#.

Well I'm moving to Web Africa's 60 GB + 60 GB capped product at R199. Been testing the 5GB test account for the last few days and it's been great compared to my current uncapped account during the day.

Well I moved from uncapped account to the best of both with @lantic/vox fat pipe and uncapped bolt on. Unshaped access is pretty cool.

50Gb + uncapped weekdays from 6pm to 6am and uncapped weekends for R248 and its all unshaped. Its really a good account.

Well its unshaped so no shaping at all. Everything runs full speed 24/7. I use it on a 4Mbps line. I play a lot of League of Legends and it kicks ass with rock solid latency.

The uncapped bolt on has been out there for ages and I joined when it was launched. I highly doubt it will change anytime soon. You should be more worried about the people on private usenet sites that use the account.
