Hi guys, I'm looking at getting my first car and have around 75- 80k max to spend. I've been looking on auto trader and gumtree but would like some suggestions at that price point.
All I'm looking for is reliability and some of the basic creature comforts. Will be mostly used for city driving too and fro campus.
Doesn't have to be a newer car either just don't want to be sitting at the mechanic half the time.

Any suggestions would he much appreciated.

Morning

Personal I would recommend Honda brio but I know, lot of mense here will disagree with me just because of the car's looks. I'm a first time driver I drive Honda brio nice little car, to get you going it has the basic 2 airbags, abs, power steering, radio with USB& aux, all round electric Windows and electric mirrors.

Fuel tank less than R500 the downside it has a tiny boot, but for a first time driver it's easy to drive and parking it's a breeze.

The car is tiny and has ugly rear with glass tailgate. I am sure you can get 2013/2014 model for R80k to R85k. Yes it's ugly but reliable, as first time driver I am sure you don't want to be left stranded in the middle of the road.

Please if you do decide to buy the brio stay away from the one with beige interior. Personal I'm happy with the car it has not disappointed me.

Another favourite car of mine is Suzuki Swift but with your budget you will get 2009/10 model with bit of high mileage.

1. Honda Brio
2. Suzuki Swift
3.Kia Picanto (2006- 2010 model)
4.Ford Fiesta (2006) very good car if you ask me.
5.Honda Jazz (2004/08 model)
6.Daihatsu Sirion (Daihatsu no longer sold in Mzansi but sirion is Toyota yaris underneath).

Reliability Honda, Suzuki and Ford fiesta.

e36 325i or 328i you can get for around 50k, and you get very good examples at that price- these cars are surprisingly very cheap to maintain.

ae92 Toyota Twincam, I would stay away from the 20v

Stay away from Renault the is a thread here on mybb, someone was complaining that he/she has to pay R16000 to replace cambelt. If I remember correctly the car is going for 90000km service so please stay away from Renault.

Another car that comes to my mind underrated, nissian Micra just like Honda brio it's ugly but reliable little car.

Honda Brio fuel usage fuel tank (35 litre) give me close to 600km. I am happy with the car I have 2014 model, I want to get 2016 facelift. Service at the dealer R2500 including labour, material cost less than R1000 plus labour hourly rate of R730. So I'm sure at independent workshop it will be cheap.

you can buy a complete 325i second hand motor and gearbox with warranty and have it fitted for that price

Hey I know Chev pulled out of the country, but if you could find a little Spark, they are not bad on fuel, they don't have a cambelt (cam chain), services so far have been around 2000 or under. We've had one for four years now and ours has given no issues. They aren't big, they aren't fancy but they get the job done.

With R80k I'm sure he is going to fine the previous generation, that one with round eyes (headlamps)

But I still if he/she is looking for something bigger Honda Jazz or Ford Fiesta/Figo. That Peugeot 208 it's a beauty just not sure about reliability. Plus the aren't many dealers around.

You'll find some going for R80k they'll be 2012/2013 models though, the Honda Jazz he's only going to get 7 maybe 8 year old cars, the Figo in his price range is going to be that horrid one from about 2011 as well. You'll be surprised by the Spark, I'm 6.3 and I fit in it comfortably and as a student doing city driving it will be fine.

I don't have anything against Chevy sparks, lovely little car you can also pimp it up add roof rails. While on Chevy how about sexy sonic don't you think he/she can fine 2010/12 model for R80k.

Honda Jazz it's going to be old one but reliable. Anywhere let's say if I get financed for R80k car monthly I can pay how much. I think we should narrow down to three cars and recommend the best one. I feel like we confusing OP throwing in different cars.

Kia Rio
Kia Picanto
VW Polo

Did you see the budget R80k I doubt the is Kia Rio for that price, unless previous generation 2006 model. Don't know about VW Polo while we still throwing ideas around. How about Hyundai Getz or Toyota Aygo.

If I was a student with 80k I’d buy myself a nice Mini.

Or be boring and sensible and go for all of the above except the French Cars.

Kia Rio’s are worthless second hand.

You could get a 2013 for a wee bit more.

95k or so.
