Jeep Cherokee older model for 50k put the extra 30k away for when the motor gives .

Awesome little 4x4 that's actually capable. lots of space . Safer then an i10 with a lot more satisfaction. Not the most cost effective buy
 
Going through the suggestions, 2 vehicles spring to mind - in line with the Honda Brio, maybe have a look at the Toyota Aygo as well. My SO had one and now has a I10. IMHO the Aygo is by far the better of the 2. When I borrowed the little Toyota, and "thrashed" it around for a couple of weeks, I was still getting 18 - 19km/l. We completed a 600km holiday roadtrip on just a little more than 1 tank of fuel as well. Its more comfortable, handled better and was much more fun and easier to drive. The only downsides are that service parts are not always immediately available and it really doesn't like going uphills. The I10 has a few extra bells and whistles, but that's about it.

Then look for a Swift elsewhere.
My point was to consider a Swift and I merely used the advertisement to show that they are available at that price.

Won't surprise me at all! But the few parts I did get from France were here in 4 weeks. Currently waiting for a drive side window and I am confident it will be here in early February.

Funny thing is, when I went to PG Auto glass they told me they only have stock on the windows for the 407 station wagon, not the coupe.
So that sweet V6 with it's slick 6 speed tip-tronic box is the ultimate student car.
It's no Vista Cruiser, but this is not the 70's Show.

You’d think that being French, I’d defend them but it’s the contrary.

Everybody in the family who had french cars got bad experiences (including a windscreen pretty much flying away on a 206cc or the electronics giving up on a brand new Mégane II).

The only one praising french cars was my grandfather who’s only ever had official cars maintained by the government (old DS, GS, XM, 605...).

Since then, we all stick to German (I cheated and had a Swedish).

I often like the looks (the new DS), but then remember the issues.
 
I've stuck to German cars and growing up it was very much Toyota / VW / Mercedes. Before I came along my grandpa did like Peugeot but switched to VW.

Only recently did I buy my first French car and I was prepared for the worst. Only it was fine. I did do a lot of work on the car, but nothing critical to the operation of it. I would definitely buy French again, but as with all my cars, only after scrutinizing them very well. Saw a few very dodgy ones in my quest for the sexy coupe I now have.

Exactly the lesson I learned last year. There are so many cars totally under valued and they make awesome buys. Next for me will be something like a Brera, 159, CLK, CL 600 or something along those lines. The cars no one wants because they are blind lemmings.

But always do your homework on these. The reason they are so under valued is because they are mostly bought by "non car people" and those can neglect the cars which is what often lead to their bad reputation. A well maintained on is as good as any other car.

Yeah and I certainly wouldn’t risk it on a primary car.
 
Honda Accord/ballade/Jazz, you'll get one in awesome condition for that price and probably under 10yrs old.

Can't go wrong with a Honda, just don't service it at Honda though because they ain't cheap, a good independent will sort you out.

Honda also hold their value better than most other brands recommended here. Never get a Frenchie and think you are ever going to recover any value even if you baby it.

Everyone and their dog knows Honda is a no brainier - and you pay for that no brain engagement.

But, if you do apply some brain and look at the ones considered crap you might find a good deal among them. All depends on what mindset you have. I used to be of the mainstream brands with under 100,000km kilos school of thinking, but I was taught a lesson on that, you can get way more car for your money if you are willing to do some footwork.

There's no free lunch when it comes to vehicles, you can wing it a bit with these "hidden gems" if you have a lot more than average know how in terms of how to maintain vehicles out of warranty, find aftermarket parts supplies, even order parts/bits from eBay/intl sellers but for the average vehicle owner that's pushing the envelope into dangerous territory.

You do not want to have to rely on the agents for these "sleeper hits", even just the dealer parts prices can bankrupt the relationship.
