Car purchase...

..., but what about getting stuff like, gear locks or steering lock or even BOTH

That would be great. It will make your insurance even cheaper - I'm not sure by how much though.

Does anyone, can anyone recommend a good dealership to goto... not like an expensive bunch, but someone that someone else can say "yes, I got a car from them, they were good and are good etc etc"

Anything with an Engine capacity of less than 1600 that has an aircon = Fail ;)

Aircon is a bitch on Power. Only time I really get to use it now is on my Bakkie. Don't even feel it with the V6. On my 1600 I could use it but never did because of the power loss :(

+1

get an uno turbo....

Why do you want to kill gdiza

How about a 2nd hand Mazda Etude. Don't buy a Clio if you have trouble with clutches. I still can't get used to the damn thing

for vehicle insurance, be sure to give outsurance a ring and also get in contact with Indwe Risk Services. They are quite competitive.

but ultimately, go for whoever has the best rates. hope i'm not jumping the gun, but it might be a good idea to phone them now already so you can budget ahead

Can anyone else say anything good about Indwe Risk Services?

Indwe is the amalgamation of Prestasie (i'm sure most people will remember them) and Thebe Risk Services.

if you don't "trust" them, at least phone them and get a quote from them so you can compare to others. indwe was MUCH lower than outsurance for me, your case may be different but all you need to do is ask them.

The problem is, Outsurance is a known company, going with people who give you lower premiums normally mean 'catches' involved... we all know how insurance companies are out to screw 'us' any way they can!

Why geez? Thats like R90 a month if you devide it by 12. For the piece of mind (tow-in to home when gearbox packs up, battery charge if you forget the damn lights on on those bastard corollas) it's nothing, just imagine what a normal towtruck would have asked for that R30km tow and they wouldn't want to take it to your home most probably but some place where they can rip you off more.

Check for all the options and prices:

I agree, but rememeber, that R100 odd plus everything else is what makes me go 'geez'

I hear what you're saying, but the total cost (per month) is going to hurt with all these other things included.

I'm with Indwe Risk Services. Even had to claim about a year back. No problems. And they really are competitive.

Edit: Go with the TT...(Toyota Tazz)

Ok, say you get yourself a R60 000 Bantam with no deposit. Monthly repayment is say 1,565.77 if at 16% interest rate over 4 and a half years. Insurance could be around R400 to R600 I guess. So that's around R2000 a month...

Anyone know how much the following costs;

Gear Lock (and to be installed)
Steering Lock (and to be installed)
Immobiliser (and to be installed, one where you push a button before you start the car)

My AA plan costs R500 and it's all the basics [tow in service, come and bring you petrol in the middle of nowhere etc ] BUUT i recently also bought a new car [2nd hand] and had to get insurance. So i phoned around some, and OUtsurance had a pretty solid quote , but they ALSO offer all the stuff the AA offers [tow in, courtesy cars yadah ] . Since i already paid for it at the AA, i told Outsurance to take all that jaz off.

So before going for an AA plan, just check what your insurance actually offer or at least what they "include" in their total price.

Anyway, a few things to note, since i bought my car literally in 1 day [yes that's how fast these people are , quite amazingly scary]

1. Your finance, check the interest rates and check the final monthly installments. I still believe it's best practice to take a "straight" loan..don't go anywhere near anything with the word "balloon payment" . Sure it can bring your monthly installment down, but you're basically never gonna pay off your car, the last balloon payment usually force you to trade in your car and buy a new one with yet another balloon payment [and it's an endless cycle of growing debt].

Also regarding the interest rate, you usually get the option of fixed or linked , up to you. Fixed mean it's set in stone for the entire duration, linked means if old Tito announces an interest rate cut, then your payment goes down, if it goes up your payments goes up. I prefer linked because i'm trying to be optimistic ;)

2. Insurance, you won't be able to drive the car out of the dealership without insurance. So it's not something you can usually sit around and wonder about after you bought the car....or at least i couldn't get my car without the letter from insurance.

3. You probably want to consider a TRACKING DEVICE . I.e. Netstar/Tracker which is like R100 per month + installation fee of like R800...this can cut down on the insurance quote in point 2. [but make sure it does]

4. Deposit, 10% is probably standard...the more you can pay initially the better..this applies for all loans really.

5. Get the REAL total of the finance. Dealerships tend to be a bit cheeky and add all kinds of funny stuff to it , in my case it was almost R14k of "extras" , including their "transfer/admin" fees. Things like "short term insurance" or "insurance for small scratches and chips" or "if your car is destroyed you get 10% of the value of the car back"-insurance . This is now stuff from the dealership, not insurance. Some ain't half bad [i took an extended warrantee for example, because i bought 2nd hand] , but these things add-up like crazy!

6. IF you go 2nd hand, check the warrantees! Even on a new car, make sure what kind of services you will get and what you will pay for . Check the service records etc.

After all your finance is signed and insurance sorted, then it's wham bang, registration papers + numberplates thank you mam.

THat's all i can think of now ;)

I'm going to cricket shortly, but I'm going to start looking at the normal places like Auto Trader etc...

Outsurance is phoning me Monday, but they want me to give them 'specifics' which means "what type of car, year model etc" so that they can at least give me a 'ball park' figure on insurance.
