After trying to deal with Cell C about them overcharging me through their call centre (joke), Facebook page and their nearest shop to me, I'm on the verge of writing them off.

As a last resort, maybe someone here has a suggestion.

Here's the story:

I use a prepaid / pay-as-you-go Cell C SIM in my phone. The primary reason I got the Cell C SIM was because of the 15c per MB data rate.

To ensure you get this rate you have to jump through a hoop for Cell C by buying a data bundle every 30 days (or they charge you nearly 700% more. I.E. 99c per MB).

So ever since they introduced their 99c package this is what I have done without fail every month to make sure I never have to pay the 99c per MB rate.

After noticing my airtime was being used up a lot faster than I estimated it should have been, I double-checked the rate Cell C were deducting airtime from my balance for using data and worked out it was at the 99c per MB rate. When I queried it the clown-show began.

First I was told that they don't have any record of me buying the data bundles therefore I did not qualify for the 15c per MB rate. Fortunately I make all my airtime purchases through FNB and I save all the confirmation SMSes and they show on my bank statements. At no time since I moved to Cell have I been outside a 30 day window and therefore subject to the 99c rate.

When that didn't shut me up I was told on a different call, by a supervisor, that browsing is billed at 15c per MB but downloads are billed at 99c per MB, irrespective of the in or out-of-bundle status. When I demanded that she refer me to the terms and conditions stipulating that billing structure she said it was "on the Cell C website" and ended the conversation. She also said she would phone back with the terms. Of course that never happened.

I then decided to visit the V&A Waterfront store to speak to someone face to face. While very friendly and seemingly keen to be helpful, all that has happened is I now have yet another reference number to add to my collection and Cell C are still overcharging me by about 700% for data while I wait for someone to respond.

From my experience the 15c per MB data rate is nothing but marketing BS from Alan Knott-Craig and Cell C has no intention of charging customers at anything less than 99c per MB.

Anyone else been through this? Suggestions? I can't bear the thought of going back to MTN or Vodacom.

Nope, I'm paying 15c a meg while in bundle.

Something is very wrong with your situation if you're paying 99c a meg while in bundle..

Yip... Cell C can make you miss Vodacom and MTN if you ever have to deal with their CSD department.

Sad... they have the potential to beat even Vodacom and already do on price but everything else is a joke.

I've had an agent lie to me about what I said. Then when I asked to hear the recorded conversation. They guy played it back to me from what sounded like his desktop speakers. He kept on asking "can you hear, can you hear". Really Cell C you cant just email it like normal people.

Hopefully they better one day when they grow-up.

i think i read here somewhere that regardless if you have a bundle or not, the rate is still 15c per Mb??
right or wrong guys?

Cell C drops standard data tariffs to R0.15 per MB for in and out-of-bundle usage, which is perfect for tablet users.
I still think that means after your bundle is depleted, and for the remainder of the month, not if you've never loaded a bundle.

Edit: If their data rate was a flat R0.15 per MB, why would they sell data bundles at all?

Follow up on this. That chick needs to be fired! A supervisor? :wtf:

It confused me as well. The rate is flat, regardless of whether you've loaded a bundle or not.

Hi Aztech, please PM me your number, i'll investigate. Please send me reference numbers as well, will follow up. *DM*

how confused I was!
I though out of bundle meant you didnt need a bundle! so i was operating with no bundle nothing and airtime just going and me just loading..thinking this is normal!!
just checked my data usage for the past few months and yip getting nailed at 99c per mb coz i had no bundle in the first place!

all this marketing-speak lost me a few hundred bucks for sure!especially since i use 300-400mb a month! this is funny!!

guess i've learnt now- just load that R7-50 50mb bundle at the start of the month and have that 30day window where i will then be "out of bundle" at 15c per mb.

Correct, it is why we read the forum. :)

Don't count on it. That's exactly what I have been doing since Cell C launched their 15c per MB deal and they are still charging me 99c per MB out-of-bundle. From my experience, just because their CEO and their advertising say they only charge 15c per MB, that is no reason to think that is what you will be charged, even if, like me, you buy a data bundle EVERY GODDAMN MONTH.

The problem in the original post is not a failure to comprehend the hurdles Cell C have in place to prevent customers getting the lower rate, it's the fact that even after we jump through the hoops they've set up, they still don't honour the deal they advertised.

Bump. (This is still unresolved after a month.)

Bump. (This is still unresolved after a month.)

Hope it gets sorted.
Why would you call buying a data bundle jumping through a hoop though.

I also try to buy enough data to cover my usage for the month. It is much easier to keep track that way.

I hope I never have to deal with cell c call centres judging by the stories I hear.
My friend recently tried to open a contract through cell c direct and sure to poor communication, not staying all the facts, when they called her to say she may now take out the contract she declined.

I think cell c should invest in training their call centre staff in both the technicalities and professionalism. It actually deters people from joining even though they have the best deals.

I have since convinced my friend to port to cell c prepaid. I really hope they sort out these issues soon.

Cell C Data Scam Going Strong

This has become a running joke.

Every time I accidently go 'out of bundle' on Cell C I find they're charging me 99c per MB instead of the advertised 15c. Sometimes it's when I have a few hundred Rand balance which vanishes in a matter of minutes. The only reason I moved to Cell C was the promise from Alan Knott-Craig that there was a 15c per MB data rate.
CELL C DROPS STANDARD DATA TARIFF TO R0.15 PER MB FOR IN AND OUT-OF-BUNDLE USAGE ACROSS ITS DATA PORTFOLIO

What a load of bull!

Here's some more nonsense on their website FAQ. (It's about LTE specifically, but applies to prepaid data generally.)

How do customers TopUp data on LTE?

Customers recharge with airtime or a data bundle via;
ATM or internet banking (this is dependent on your bank supporting this)[SUP][1][/SUP] OR
by recharging with a DATA or recharge voucher
Once the airtime is loaded you can dial *147# and convert airtime to data OR
Simply use the recharged airtime to surf @ 15c/MB[SUP][2][/SUP]

[1] I bank with FNB and although you can make data bundle purchases via FNB they don't always show up on the Cell C system even though you have received the credit. This means the Cell C system doesn't have a record of when you purchased a data bundle, which it needs so the it has a record of when you are in or out of the 30 day 15c / MB window. So since it looks like you haven't made a bundle purchase in more than 30 days (yes, their back office systems really are that bad!) they charge you the higher rate by default. So much for 'no out-of-bundle surprises' Alan Knott-Craig!

[2] HAHAHAHAHA. They mean 99c, but what's a 600% overcharge between friends?

And in response to tonight's genius in their call centre who argued with me that Cell C never advertised that there was a 15c / MB out of bundle rate, this is from your own damn website:

BUNDLE Cost | In Bundle Rate/MB | Out of Bundle Rate/MB | Increment
50MB | R7.50 | R0.15 | R0.15 | 5kB
100MB | R15.00 | R0.15 | R0.15 | 5kB
300MB| R45.00 | R0.15 | R0.15 | 5kB
500MB | R75.00 | R0.15 | R0.15 | 5kB
1GB | R149.00 | R0.15 | R0.15 | 5kB
2GB | R310.00 | R0.15 | R0.15 | 5kB

I've come to terms with the fact that Cell C are either unable or unwilling to rectify this problem (it must be worth millions every month) so the only thing is to warn people considering Cell C: Do not assume Cell C are charging you a reduced rate, no matter how much they advertise it. There's every chance they will charge you a higher rate if they think they can get away with it. Either management or their systems are not to be trusted.

Cell C Clown Show - Act (lost count) scene 9000

1. Complain to Cell C call centre about being overcharged. Again / as usual.

2. get into argument with clueless Cell C agent who insists that all data out-of-bundle is charged at 99c per MB.

3. Speak to supervisor who seems to understand that their is a problem with Cell C system and it's causing me to be overcharged for out-of-bundle data.

4. Get confirmation that complaint will be investigated.

5. Receive SMS response from Cell C:

Good Morning
Kindly be advised that smartdata internet was used and you where (sic) correctly charged.
Kind Regards
CellC Team

6. Phone Cell C to ask how they came to this conclusion. Effectively begin at step 1 all over again.

Scene 9001 to follow...

Once you know how to avoid 99c/MB OOB and follow procedure, there will be no Rip-Off.

Purchase a small bundle R7.50 every month and your OOB will be 15c/MB.

Does anyone know for how long the after-bundle-rate is supposed to remain at 15c/MB?
Is it 30 days from purchase, until the end of the current calendar month, or the end of the next calendar month?
