Cell C Network Issues: Disconnects, Coverage, Throughput Problems - Report Here

Seems Cell C has gone down in Bruma JHB. No signal. Could be related to the big storm we had earlier. Networks search brings up only Telkom and MTN on both 3G and 2G

Braamfontein: Signal strength has weakened considerably

Location: Braamfontein (Johannesburg)
Time of issue: From 19:00 onwards Friday 4th November 2011
Device: Black Cell C modem E1820

My modem keeps falling off the network every 30 minutes or so, and automatically re-connects again, but all cookies and sessions are broken. It logs in as 3G, then settles on HSUPA. Then it loses HSUPA signal, goes back to 3G and no throughput for 2 mins before cutting off. It's very frustrating.

Download speeds have reduced by 70% recently and uploads seem to send small packets at 70/kpa of data intermittently every 1 second. Therefore uploads of +/- 3mb take up to 7 minutes to send.

Can someone assist?

The signal seems to have deteriorated and has become very unstable. Where I used to have full 3G signal at the house...now my phone does not pick up Cell C 3G anymore on my phone. Even the 2G singal has become erratic. It will go from 3 bars to 0 and then the phone goes into SOS mode and then 2 or 3 seconds later after moving around it will pick up signal again. When I am at work in Midrand it is fine..full 3G signal. I have also noticed that my calls are dropping very frequently when at home...and not at work in Midrand.

Any other information relevant to the problem: Signal strength has significantly dropped over the past couple of months. Would usually get between -65dBm and -70dBm. Most recent problem, though, is the modem simply disconnecting. Dashboard still seems to think the connection is live, but the modem light (Dark Blue) is just blinking. Modem also seems to be quite warm to the touch. I have to got into Task Manager to close the Cell C dash (as it becomes unresponsive once I click "Disconnect"). Only then can I attempt to reconnect. After a few minutes (between 2 and 15), it disconnects again. VERY ANNOYING.

Note that the Dashboard issue does not happen when I use MDMA - "Disconnect" changes to "Connect", yet if I try open the Cell C dash after that, it still thinks it's connected. Help?!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that my speeds have also dramatically dropped. Was getting 5Mbps+ previously.

I tried to check my balance several times last night after disconnecting and got this message repeatedly: "Message from network: Your operation has failed, please contact the call centre on 140."

So I couldn't check my balance. Today it's working fine though. I haven't had that problem before. Anyone else?

The tower I usually connect to and got decent speeds with (cell ID 22492) has disappeared. I have great speeds for approximately 10 minutes and thereafter the throughput drops to ~100kbps. Resetting the connection and my modem fixes the problem for another 10 minutes. This problem has been happening consistently for the past two days. I am in Onderpapegaaiberg, Stellenbosch.

The Buzz is dead. (cnr Witkoppen / Douglas). I used to get decent 3G there but since yesterday, not even EDGE is happening. Aaargh!

Tried various modems. Even HTC is dead. Phoned, spoke to a lady, got cut off and she never bothered to call back which would have meant another ten minutes with the next operator.

Signal has been really bad for a while now, but today is just it. I cannot get even 3G. Signal strength is not too bad either. Swapped the sim into my Sony Ericsson, same result.
