Cell C slashes data bundle prices

The solution to your problem is patience, im sure topup pricing will get released at some point. This is day 1 of the soft launch.

The topup is released see below, the topup or Out Of Bundle (OOB) is as R0.39/Mb or R390/Gb Ouuch!!

I was really looking forward to this but seeing the TopUp it is a big NO for me!

OUT-OF-BUNDLE DATA USAGE
• Once you've used up your bundle, the out-of-bundle tariff of R 0.39/MB will apply.

yea, the out of bundle charge is a deal breaker for me also. i wont commit to cell-c till they change those rates. even R60 - R70 per GB would be reasonable, altho pushing it.

well its saterday and its not live yet ?

maybe delayed again ?

This is great news Cell-C, but when is your speedy network coming to Durban? Not too long I hope.

I don't need 21mbps, I am in Durbs as well and will settle for edge for now at these prices. I can stretch it out for the month at low speed low cost and still come out way ahead on everything else based on my browsing habits and needs. So is this package for area where 4Gs has been launched only or can I buy a data sim and get mobile internet on my 3G handsets ( Nokia 6120c & 5230) today? Today today today?

vodacom only charge that on prepaid, on data bundles you pay ALOT less. Cell-c also charge R1.50 per MB on prepaid.

mtn charge R230 out of bundle, that still comes in R119 cheaper than cell-c.

and atleast with mtn you know you are getting a good service and wont suffer network drops, bad pings or anything like that. cell-c are yet to prove themselves and at this stage they need to really come in quite a bit cheaper than the competition to pull clients over.

R390 per GB , that is F@CKING ridiculous !!!!

How can I find out if they have coverage in my area?

There is a fundamental difference between topup and OOB. Yes for now they are effectively acting as the same thing as cell c hasnt released their new topup pricing, but lumping them together in the way that you do is hardly fair when you take into account they already have a topup spread from the old network.

OOB is always slightly expensive because it is a low usage product mostly used for cellphones. My guess is that average usage is around 5-15mb. They have to charge a bit more to make it worthwhile at such low levels. The bottom line is vodacom is charging R2 and now cell c is charging 39 cents.

I'm sure in the next short while they will update their existing topup spread - we just have to be patient.

At what point did MyADSL become the marketing mouthpiece? They leaked out a flyer with details about CellC's new network weeks ago and was told specifically by CellC that it wasn't accurate (and it wasn't). Why would CellC / MyBB do that?

(a) Because it's what the readers want ... heck, we love it, especially if it's speculative and inaccurate. (b) Because it's what Cell C wants ... create a lot of buzz and talk by 'leaking' something 'speculative' and fuzzy and potentially exciting to one of the most popular SAn tech-focused websites ... it's just marketing. I do get the impression MyADSL have become a bit less "rebel/rogue" than their early days (i.e. put pressure on incumbents etc.) and a bit more cosy with providers, but by and large they're not doing a bad job still ... it's good for the market the way they help put public focus quickly on good deals etc., thus helping get real price wars and competition going.

Mobile Data Wars

If Cell C want to conquer this market, as in immediately, they must abolish the limit per month in GB of these packages, and make it PURE pre-paid packages. Therefore, once the in bundle data is used up, whenever that may be, the customer can just pay for another data bundle using the SAME sim. Make it a hard capped account (so the customer don't get unexpected huge bills for OOB usage) and warn the customer when they get close to the prepaid usage, so the customer can top-up in advance.

They will not be able to stay ahead with the market demand !

Hopefully you are right, anyway there is bit of time before they come to Cape Town and by then things might be clearer.

I need 20Gb of high bandwith for work on a monthly basis, the rest can stay on my lousy ADSL since Telkom won't do anything to improve the line or install a DSLAM. If topup is really out too much, I can always buy 4 packages and change the SIM card on weekly basis ;-))

I was thinking do the same just with 2 packages but I see that they have a Fair use policy. http://www.cellc.co.za/packages/datapromotion_bundles/fair-use-policy

If you do get 4 sims I would think about using a different sim every day or two instead of using the whole 5gig in a week

The FUP doesn't make sense on capped packages, or am I missing something? If you paid for the Gigs then using all of it in 1 day or over 30 days is up to you? Maybe they're planning uncapped as well.

But using it in one day instead of 30 puts more stress on the network on that day, and may result in a decreased quality of service to other users.
