Dude, I can think of much harsher terms to describe myself. I know full well that I am hated by many and thats cool with me. Crowd pleasers and hypetards are not my scene.

But let me refrain from getting personal. In the second part of my post you will see that I commend Cell-C on taking a step in the right direction, but they really should have done it a little better. Buying data upfront for a year is very inflexible.

Why would you want to get personal? I just confirmed your hypothesis about people thinking you were stupid. So tell us, in harsher terms, how would you describe yourself? But please, start your own thread.

As for the ASA, they are bloody useless - I can think of many more important issues that they should address, such as the advertising slogans of the Casinos, which are criminally misleading, and are encouraging people to gamble who really cannot afford it.

BUT, you have to remember that the ASA is there to protect the consumer.

I, for one, am glad that the ASA is keeping things in check. As a consumer, you have the right to know exactly what you are buying.

A lot of that is wrong :

Coverage in East London, Port Elizabeth, Durban (including Umhlanga, Ballito, right up past Stanger), Bloemfontein, PieterMaritzburg and Cape Town. Also works in Joburg (not released).

Many current devices support 900MHz UMTS - for example my old Huawei K3565 USB modem, my Sony Vaio P 3G, and my phone (E72) all work.

Speeds are faster than my 4mbps Telkom ADSL, and a lot cheaper - I may cancel my ADSL service.

Let us assume that there is a smartphone (call it the Palm Pre, or whatever you like) that is superior to the iPhone (this is just a hypothetical case, please do not flame me for this). Now, if Vodacom slaps an Apple logo on this phone (the Palm Pre), and starts selling it as an "iPhone 4b" (where the "b" means better than iPhone 4, but the "b" is in such small print that nobody really sees it), would you still think that this is OK?

You are conflating the two arguments, which are:
a) whether the Cell C offer is fast, a good deal, or the answer to world peace, and
b) whether it is correct / legal for them to call it "4G" (or "4Gs").

This thread is mostly (or should be) concerned with argument (b) above.

Anyhow, I never said that advertising has to be truthful in all respects. It is perfectly acceptable to say something like "new mattress X will give you the best night's sleep ever", and so forth. It is not acceptable to say that "product Y supports standard Z", when said product Y does not actually support standard Z, which is exactly what this debate is about.

Cell C is now trying to say that "4Gs" does not refer to the technology being used, while the reasonable man on the street will in fact make that association.

1.Its Faster than any other 3g/HSDPA, much much FASTER!!!

Most of my stuff doesn't need it, it all supports UMTS 900Mhz. If you bought obsolete cr@p then that's your problem, it's not a general issue. But as I say that I am going to buy the E1820 from Cell C, it's fast modern technology and it's a bargain at R1000.

I have Telkom 4mps ADSL right now, it's cr@p, and expensive (the line costs kill it). I believe that Cell C will be faster, and if it is then I will cancel the Telkom ADSL.

Perhaps they are already involved in cases against them (e.g., Vodacom "Broadband" advertising). But I am sure that the Gambling Industry can afford better lawyers than the ASA, so it is possible that previous complaints have already been deflected.

Anyhow, you are of course entitled to lodge a complaint with the ASA about the Gambling Industry.
