I'm looking for the cheapest possible media player that supports all the most popular formats as well as ISO so I can make an image of a DVD and simply copy it to a flash drive and play it.

Must also have the following

HDMI
SD reader
USB port

For a nice Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC) look no further then the Xtreamer Ultra Pc! Only disadvantage is the small, inbuild fan,but it is supposed to go off while its on but not streaming.

As far as I know the only thing that can do all that is a PC.

I have an PLAYON!HD Essential
Has HDMI out, SD and 2x USB. Haven't tried using the SD slot though. Plays pretty much everything I've got.

Got it from Esquire late last year for <R700 iirc. Doesn't come with a HDD or HDMI cable though.

Weird, I think you've been living in a bubble for awhile then ;-). I know there is a cheapish Mede8er that you plug external hard drives into that goes for about R1000

Does it handle mkv HD stuff as well?

Yes Its a Samsung B550 40" in case you looking for one.

I use default options in Handbrake and copy a DVD onto USB to watch on my TV.

I couldnt find a codec list of what it plays :(

The Samsung TV's is of the few that I have encountered that you can flash and update the firmware(Add Support for more formats)
The latest TV's also has internet capability, pity we did not have them in SA when I bought mine. Do not buy the US Models as they normally have this functions striped out due to legality issues.

See http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/co...RXXA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&returnurl=

Formats I have tested and worked so far Divx, Xvid, AVI, Mpeg1/2, mkv and DVD ISO's

Try th WD HD Live. It has 2 USB2.0 slots, HDMI Out, Composite and Component. Plays MKV's easily. Streams really well and if you fancy there is custom firmware available for more features i.e. moviesheets, usb hub support, pandorar radio etc. Kalahari has it for <R1000. Good value for money, IMHO.
