lock it?

sure, go ahead - do what you need to do. we will simply create another one.

Is vodacom upset because we have a thread to talk about their extremely high priced internet? Isn't this *exactly* how MyBB got friggen started? isn't this what it's about - fighting for cheaper broadband?

/shakes head

My post about Vodacom screwing us over was not taken well. Not sure what was said after that...

Guess they are just trying to play nice? :p

My usage has already dropped by more that 50% and I will keep on using Vodacom as little as possible.

haven't used them for around 2 months now - so happy with MTN it's not even funny - I can download at 4 to 5.5 MBps constantly, 100% Stable

A Weird thing I experienced though, is that if you have 2 x 3G Modems in 1 room, both connected, they only run at +- 3Mbps....... disconnect 1 modem and BAM! Back to 5.5Mbps for the other - very strange indeed heheh...

Reduced mine from over R3000/month to under R100/month. Amazing what you can do with the savings!

I am happy for people to talk about the topic, but when it's reduced to multiple people posting comments about taking one up the proverbial, there is no more value in the discussion. Recent examples above of people finding alternative providers and ways to save is what will make Vodacom listen, not lewd sexual statements.

Vodacom's pricing has become a bit of a sore point for everyone lately, and some of us are particularly sensitive about it. There's not really much to discuss, in the end we can only take it.

When people on SHAPED UNCAPPED accounts end up with an effective rate of R1 - R2 per GB... and Vodacom still thinks its acceptable to charge R200 for the same GB...

Lock whatever you wanna lock; Scowl and judge from your high horse all you want.

Couldn't care less anymore. By Friday my new line is installed and I will probably never use Vodacom again.

I no longer use large MTN/Vodacom data bundles as I pay R80/Gig on Neotel. Not the best solution, but hey, its cheeper than overpriced 3G. The problem is that Neotel won't drop their prices until such time that Vodacom/MTN drop their prices.

I have an Android phone which on average uses 15MB per week to sync all the social network stuff, so at R2 per MB its quite costly.

Has anyone tried http://www.gconnect.co.za/ ?

It seems they are selling 3G connection for 62c per MB and as far as I can tell, you just need to 'marry' your sim card to your account. Though seems to work on Vodacom contracts only.

Do I need a SIM and how do I provision it?
You do need a SIM if you wish to connect via 3G. To provision your SIM login to your account and select the SIM Provisioning option from the menu bar to find out how the cookie crumbles. Please note that this excludes Pay-as-you-go, Top-Up SIMS, Nashua Mobile, Autopage Cellular, MTN, Virgin Mobile and Cell C SIM cards.

Then enter this in your APN:
What are the 3G APN details?
APN: www.tsamma.com
Username: GConnect
Password: GConnect

Gonna try this out since I already have a gconnect account.

G-connect looks like a great alternative for low use users at 62c/mb. Looking at their different "bundle" per MB cost it's even more broken than Vodacom, it does not make sense to buy anything other than the R200 30 day pass.

R 150 30 Day Broadband Pass 45c per MB
R 200 30 Day Broadband Pass 28c per MB
R 299 30 Day Broadband Pass 35c per MB
R 389 30 Day Broadband Pass 35c per MB
Normal Rate 62c per MB
Super Happy Weekend 59c per MB
Happy Hour 55c per MB

How does that R200.00 pass work? You pay the R200.00 and then you still have to pay 28c per meg?

No, the R200 buys you 3G data at 28c/mb (if you think in Vodacom bundle terms). Their flexibility comes in that you can use that R200 towards other types of connectivity as well like WiFi and ADSL. I know the "one account" concept has been on the cards at Vodacom for a long time, but they have yet to pull it off.

Oh ok. So in other words R200 + R280.00 = R480.00 for 1 gig usage on Vodacom 3G (G-Connect)

Vodacom straight up is R389.00 for 1.2gig. I understand its for a one account and you use it for adsl etc etc... but this makes no sense to me. Most average joes out there will have either ADSL or 3G.

No. You only pay R200. If you make use of 3G data they subtract 28c from the R200 per mb you use.

I bought R25 on GConnect and I'm now connected using my Android. Speeds seem the same as Vodacom 3G and I streamed some Youtube videos without any interruptions.

My problem is that I want to use my Android phone how it supposed to (Facebook / twitter updates, calendar sync etc etc), but without it costing an arm and a leg. I don't need a large cap, since I have ADSL already. GConnect seems to fit the bill at 0.62c AND I can control my usage since its pre-paid.

R25 = 40MB @ 0.62c per MB compared to R2 through Vodacom out of bundle. So far I'm averaging at 15MB/ week which is costing me out of bundle R120 pm. With GConnect I'll be paying ~R37 pm (this is still a joke comparing ADSL @ 0.013c per MB).

Comparing this to Vodacom's MyMeg packages (month to month - does not carry over):
8MB = R9.25 @ R1.16 per MB
30MB = R28 @ 93c per MB
110MB = R88 @ 80c per MB
175MB = R119 @ 68c per MB
300MB = R139 @ 46c per MB

None of these packages suit my needs. (PS Vodacom; whats up with the huge cents per MB difference? R2 out of bundle? WTF?)

So far I'm happy with GConnect 3G and I'll keep everyone updated if my views change.

ADSL costs 0.013c per MB? Wow, that's expensive - i'm paying around 0.0012c per MB

and that's at 4mb speeds

Considering that the average person is still paying 0.0483c per MB (R145 for 3GB), not everyone has the cash for 4MB uncapped.

Besides, no matter how you look at it, Vodacom (and any 3G provider) is blatantly ripping everyone off.
