checking if potential phone is stolen

there is a phone im interested in buying but the guy got it as a gift. how do i go about checking if it is stolen or not. although he has the box and all accessories as well. does having all these things mean its not stolen? . your input would be appreciated.

i've heard u can call mtn and check the imei number to ensure it has not been reported stolen..

It's unlikely he has the box and all the other goodies if it's stolen...

You could ask to see his originial receipt (he says it's a gift though). Otherwise, just be prepared to pay an extra 100 or so to unblock it if it ever is blocked...
