Chrome rising, Internet Explorer slides

You used Chrome for years?
It was only released to the public in december 2008. It is now may 2010, which means that it has not even been around for two years.

Haha, I knew somebody was going to pick that up, good for you.

FF is my preferred browser. Periodically I use Opera ... they open some interesting opportunities in certain websites.

The more I hear about Google's invasive practices, the more my chill grows toward their products. Don't misunderstand me, their search engine remains best, but if I don't have to use a Google product, I am happy to support something else.

Invasive practices?? Compared to who? Mircosoft, Facebook, Yahoo? What invasive practices, exactly?

Facebook blatantly compromises its users privacy in serious ways, or Microsoft and Yahoo simply hand user data over to the DoJ (while Google went to the supreme court to protect it's user's data) and there's bearly a whisper from the privacy folks. MS give China free access to it's servers in China (while Google makes sure all user identifiable data is hosted outside China)

While other companies are trying to lock users in, Google has a whole department making sure that you can get your data out of Google products easily so that there's no lock in. Data portability is a principle they believe in.

Have they made mistakes? Sure, who has't, but when they do they own up and fix it. Are they out to make a profit? Sure, but they make that profit by putting their users first. If there's going to be a major player in the tech space I'd rather it were Google than anyone else. Google's gotta be the most ethical, least invasive major corporate in a looong time. IMO.

Edit: as for Chrome and user data: "In March 2010, Google devised a new method to collect installation statistics: the unique ID token included with Chrome is now only used for the first connection that Google Update makes to its server. This sole remaining non-optional user tracking mechanism is removed following the server ping." - sounds pretty noninvasive...

Using FF now but would like to switch to Chrome sometime in the future. I've tried it on some sites and it was fast and stable.

Why? Only Firefox (and Flock) have add-ons that block crappy things like Facebook Ads, website adverts, and a whole stack of other things. (I have just found the Extensions utility in Chrome). Opera does not (and Opera is most certainly NOT the fastest browser available), IE doesn't. I won't start on IE as it will take all day. Firefox is fine without plug-ins and add-ons unless hardware resources greatly exceed minimum requirements.

Are there Chrome equivalents of Firebug and Flashgot? They are the only reason I ever use Firefox these days, otherwise I wouldn't bother with any other browser than Chrome.

Same here. I just love how Chrome gets out of the way and just let me browse. I hate looking at a browser when all I really want to see is the website. Chrome FTW!

I used Chrome for years when I was still windozing, but frequent crashes in Kubuntu Lucid and the fact that one cannot synchronize passwords to the web was the dealbreaker.

I now use FF on the nix with the XMarks Bookmarks and Password sync plugin and I'm not complaining.

There's xmarks for Chrome, Safari and IE as well,
http://www.xmarks.com/

as well as built in support to sync bookmarks and preferences with your gmail account

The developer tools are part of Chrome, no extensions/addon's needed

I use FF 90% of the time, but I do like Chrome the most of all the rest.

It's part of chrome, but I do find Firebug better, which is the only reason I ever use FF, that and to download large files with downloadThemAll plugin (haven't looked for a download manager in Chrome)

I used to think that I couldn't live without the multitude of plugins in Firefox, but Chrome's speed and stability make all the difference - especially if you're using web apps like Google apps and Gmail, and especially Wave. It's night and day. And Chrome has some pretty good plugins now

The inbuilt tools are fine, but they don't quite replace what Firebug does for me. And it would nice to be able to send youtube (and other media) files to a download manager with a single click like I can in Firefox.

Apart from that I've been using Chrome since it was launched. I've tried all the others, but after a few minutes of browsing I just want to be back in Chrome. It is fast, neat and unobtrusive, almost like it isn't there.

I agree with you there, more and more I'm finding myself automatically logged into sites I had no intention of logging into courtesy of my Gmail login.

Remains the best, but certainlly in decline, I found the recent revamp of the results page disgusting, and google's response to complaints appalling.

I've switched to Dogpile based on results page readability.

I personally use Opera, FF looks too much like IE, and Chrome feels too lightweight.

Opera's a bit like a Porsche 911, regular performance upgrades in the same comfortable shape.

As a huge FF fan, I'm finding the battery life on my netbook is about 25% longer when using Chrome than when using FF (Ubuntu 10.04). This is appreciable, as most of my netbook usage is Web-based.
