Very good looking hardware. Really beautiful...but I could never afford something like that....and I would want to install Ubuntu/Linux Mint on it...and with no HDD you cant. bleh. I think it is going to be a while still before this "OS in the cloud" idea takes off.
This is what I like about Google. They are not juts in it for the money. They are creative types that want to change the world and they are willing to use money generated from other sources, like advertising etc, to research and develop products that will change our world. For them it is not so much about being the richest company with the highest stock value. Page and Brin want to do amazing things. I like that.

This is true.
BeVonk!, How does this push the world forward. The industrial design is heavily lifted from the MBP with Retina, but without much of the hardware inside. The OS is the same as is found in $250 chromebooks (And it is extremely limited in functionality)

They might be smartphone whizzes but they are piss poor on desktop.
To me this is another desperate attempt by Google to try and capture people's minds and get a foothold in desktop where they are virtually none existant.
The only problem is that the Chrome OS simply doesn't hit the mark and they are just buying time now with this gimmicky device till they develop Android for laptops.
Microsoft is ahead in this game. Windows Blue will bring WP/Win8 integration. Google sees the threat that Win8 has and is reacting to it. Growth of Win8 will soon mean immense growth - and market depletion of Android by WP. Google needs an integrated approach like the one Microsoft has developed so that it doesn't stay only a giant in search and smartphone.
Google is way behind.
It has a mountain to climb in the desktop environment.
This is a time buying gimmick. A marketing ploy so that Google desktop stays on people's minds while they come up with a better strategy. Yuppie geeks will buy it.

Actually Chrome OS is doing good business for some manufacturers at the low price range. The Chromebook is great.
You guys just don't get it. Stuck in a rut. You look at computing with current limitations in mind instead of looking at it with an open mind where the limitations have been overcome. The current data business model in SA will have to change and the Networks will have to find new ways of making money (TV broadcasting, etc). When the flow of data is like that of a normal utility like water and power, computing will not be like it is today (device-centric). Google is at present cutting a path through the jungle. That path is still filled with dangers and obstacles, but as more follow the dangers and obstacles will go away over time.
Yep. It's fills the same market as those eepc's from a couple of years ago. Cheap and cheerful

Well, for the OS the stats do not say so.
Chrome is worse than a WP of desktop. With Chrome having virtually no marketshare WP is doing better than Chrome in comparison.
Google knows that this is a threat to its ecosystem.
Chrome doesn't show in the OS marketshare stats. WP does.
Chrome = other (or ~0.08%). WP = 3% and rising. Fast.

What are you talking about? My MacBook Air has built in cloud storage via iCloud as well and connects to the internet.
However, it's got proper local storage, better battery life, a much better OS, and is cheaper than this thing.
So once again, what better future is Google presenting here

This "thing" - if you read an earlier comment I wrote - is a statement aimed at a specific type of client. There are other ceaper "things" for the rest.
If you look carefully you'll see it comes with USB ports etc. External storage can be added. It has 64GB inside for the basics. The rest you can store in the cloud or on removable drives.
Who here has ever bothered to go to the Chrome browser web store (arrow on the right to access aps) when a new tab is opened? I'm using several aps on there already. The store has gazillions of apps. I used the Chrome browser web store for a bit. Then I stopped using it again because I realized I needed full fat applications on my desktop and the Chrome store wasn't making the grade. I need a proper Office utility, and it's not Google docs. If ever I was going to buy a premium laptop you'd better be sure it could at least do THAT much.
So tell me which SPECIFIC type of client would buy this rather than buying a real laptop with Chrome browser?

You can do all of that on a much better and cheaper MacBook
