Cities: Skylines

Round-Abouts do work well - the big ones. Traffic backs up with the small ones. Problem is that it becomes unsightly if you use too many.

I ended up using 2 large Round- Abouts - 4 exits connected to it. Round-Abouts also inter-connected as well.
The remaining 2 lanes have overhead passes connected directly to the highway.

Bought this for $24 on Green Man Gaming, if you signup.

It runs (sort of) ok on my Dual Core 2.8Ghz and Radeon 4850 at Medium 1080p.

Haven't had time to play it much yet but I have watched dozen of play videos and I'm hooked just on those.

Now I need a 4690k and a GTX960

Turning the shadows off should help immensely.

Started over (again), trying to keep away from the dreaded grids. Only had time to get around 5k pop

Looks so much better without the grids... need to restart again, but i keep finding myself going back to grids. think its the Sim City 5 fear of running out of space. which in this is not really a concern.

tried building a couple of fly overs last night in mine and it helped for about 5 ,mins where the traffic then moved to a different intersection. think i am going to reboot and try the walkways. anyone got any idea of how to delete a saved game?

I have a different city where I went overboard with walkways and there are zero cars on the road as I mentioned before, people simply walk everywhere. Although this was only at 2 tiles, but with clever metro use I'm sure you could keep it going up to max city size (which is 25 with mods).

And I'll probably go grid style for some areas. Like industry it feels right to be efficient, whereas residential (especially low density) should flow more naturally. And being able to brush trees in helps a lot with getting the aesthetics right.

Yes, off.

Actually I am completely surprised at how playable it is on my ancient PC. Even with 50 000 citizens on High detail at 1080p. Okay, it is probably only managing 10fps, but this is not a first person shooter so frame rate is hardly that important.

Still would love to see this game in all its full detail DX11 glory.

On the game itself:

The corpse bug does get very annoying (bodies piling up, resulting in abandoned suburbs). I think the engine is way too aggrresive on dead people not being collected. It doesn't really add any value or playability to the game. But it's a minor irritation and i'm sure it will be fixed soon.

Otherwise, I'm completely hooked. Managed to play for 3 hours and realise I really suck at road design. But for now I'm simply playing with all the different roads and assets. My goal is not to design a pretty city, but rather get a feel for the game mechanics.

I think firstly you need to build an ugly city and figure out how it all works.

Then you come with a pretty one

This is what I'm realising after my 6th restart :p Going to get to 75k+, then I'll start over again properly

Seems we're getting a patch today, best thing imo - "road upgrade tool now works between two-way and one-way roads and right mouse-button changes direction of one-way roads"

I don't like grids... really, so unimaginative, but they do kinda make sense, 'specially if Godzilla shows up. (Lotsa exits)

Anyhoo, I love swirly twirly roads, like paths that people walk meandering about the place, it seems more natural. Also wastes a lot
of good space that squares don't, but you can fill those spaces up with trees. Also, not good during an actual Godzilla encounter, unless you aim to run away, into the forests set up around the houses, but ya.

Sigh.

Obviously the moment I figured out you can go swirly in 3d I very nearly had a simgasm.

And the roadscaping tool is great in this game, I think Cities XL had a more flexible one, but also more frustrating. I just wish you could get an option where if you swirl a one way onramp onto a 4 or 6 lane road that you can limit it to just "flowing" into the lanes rather than creating a whole 3 or 4 way stop, meaning it doesn't open up the divider. Oh and once you've place a road, if you are laying tarmac under a raised one that, if your lower road hits a support, the support is "reconstructed" at a cost, to allow it to flow under.

Just a thought.

PS. Maxis / EA (pthuh!) fire your staff, seriously, this game is way, way, waaaaaaaaaaay better.

Lol, OMG! Everything EA touches turns to... nothing. Sucking the life out of a product till there is f-all left, then on to the next one.

They are the anti-Steve.

Seriously.

So what are the chances some of the guys ended up with the Skyline guys?

Hi Guys

are there any Demo's available to see if I like it and if my Hardware can handle it?

mossie

I'm going to try and mimic your city. It looks so efficient.

No matter how hard I try, I just **** it up with traffic issues.

Load up some pics, maybe I can give you some pointers? I basically try to make a small district, connect it with walkways to a central point, and from there run buses or metro. Think I'm at 18k pop, and 1.2k use public transport. Many of the rest simply walk to work and back since I also connect some of the central points together. It's not perfect but I've had no major hangups so far, though 18k is hardly huge

Made an album now, will upload as I go along - http://imgur.com/a/G6axR
