I know I say I download porn with it, and sometimes I seriously do. Most of the time it's for work purposes...
mhhh... Are there any vacancies where u work?

Hehe, not at the work place, but I get subsidised for an internet connection at home... ala WBS + Porn = afterhours

Pan, I re-iterate what I said in a previous post.

And this time I'll be lame and type it in caps :

YOU ARE PAYING A DISCOUNTED RATE FOR A SERVICE THAT HAS NOT BEEN LAUNCHED YET AND WILL HAVE HICUPS

<end>

If you still wish to cancel and tell all your clients not to get iburst, be my guest, at least idiots like you won't be online then...

And the rest of us will have more bandwidth ...

The other day I got pissed off at how slow they were, so I opened up 6 cmd boxes and started to ping their website with 1024/2048/3072/4096/5120/10240 bytes. I got ping replies (and actually, less packet loss) from each and everyone of them. Obviously not as low as usual, around 900ms.

My firewall then started blocking the replies (hence some of the packet loss) because it thought I was under a DoS attack from www.iburst.co.za :D

Mmmmmm... I wonder.... 20kb/s * 1500 pissed off iburst users = dooms day

Why is it that I get fragmentation with 1392, WBS please explain this perplexer!

You forgot the header. You do the ping to get the unfragmented data size and then add the header size to the result to get the MTU.

I heard thro my sources that wbs has a 32MB pipe to UUNET! Do some calcs and you will find out that with 1500 existing users you get 32 000KB/1500 = 21K per user!! Does that not explain why we barely get 150k at times and more like 50k.

Users in CT are few and they are hogging the BW and therefore get 450k, like we used to in December!!!

Imagine WBS get their target of 15000 users.....u could probably run faster and collect your data!

My problem is still fluctuating signal and mostly non-existent Upload Speed, resulting in major packet loss & retransmissions on the download side.

Any sign of the antennas, yet?

I'm very happy with my signal, but still having that wierd intermittant Google problem.

ic, he would probably deny that statement and pull a Sentech orc style move of "you are the first person that called in with the problem" on you.

I'm evaluating their support desk at this stage, and if I feel in the next 2 months that they are treating me sub-par like they're doing now, i'm out of there. I'd rather give someone else my money who could provide me with decent service.

Call there call centre and the voice prompt says ".....accessories r now available like antennas...." Ask them for one and they say they dont have them yet....

Well, I'm starting to see a pattern in my situation. Perhaps it can help someone else... or not. :D

At work I get 5 LEDs, 100% signal (no surprise - I look out the window and see the tower about 2 kms away). FER varies between 0% and 25%. [USB connection] Oh, and no 0% upload. Average upload is what I expect (and what others wish they had).

At home, 6 kms away from here, and about 7 - 8 kms from the tower (not LOS - I'm lower, with a slight bump bewteen sender and receiver) I get 2-4 LEDs (ethernet connection), and average d/l speed maxes at about 40KB/sec. However, I have a major problem with 0% upload speed. Several times a night this happens, for no good reason. When it does happen, the LEDs keep on doing their thing, although I have noticed that it occasionally reches a whole 1 LED (the lower light goes a sickly yellow for a few seconds before the signal bounces up again). This is not the disco effect (although I've had that before too).

Okay, I've spilled my brains. Can anyone sort out this mess?

<edit>
Ok, I was wrong. I just experienced the 0% upload from work. Thing is, when I disconnect=>reconnect, it disappears.

Your experience is my experience. In my study I got 0-4 LEDs (except for a 24 hour stretch from the twilight zone when I got an almost solid 5!) I moved my modem upstairs and outside, overlooking Sandton/Randburg and now get a permanent 5 LEDs. I've gone from 20-30KB/s max to >120KB/s max.

Which leads me to beleive that you JUST HAVE TO HAVE 5 LEDs 100% signal strength from IBurst to avoid tearing out your hair. Anything less doesn't cut it.

If relocation doesn't help, an external antenna might well be the solution (if you can get one). But I would be wary of placing it too far from your modem because the deteriation in the signal along the cable may well wipe out most of the gain you receive from the antenna. Once the modem has processed the signal, however, you can run a very long ethernet cable from the modem to your PC with virtually no deterioration at all.

Well, at the moment my UTD travels to work with me, but once the cap is implemented I may well try a more permanent place somewhere in my roof...

we need to differentiate between signal strength from base-station to UT
Then there is signal strength from the UT to base-station(s)

Agreed, so presummably the LED's on our modems are only giving us the first half of the story. But one would expect the two to be correlated.

Although I've had good speed with a poor signal, I occasionally get poor speed with a good signal. In these instances, pinging results in a lot of timeouts.

So either the base station doesn't get the requests, or it doesn't process them. I tend to think it is the latter. Is it a congestion/capacity issue or something that can be fixed? It always seems to come right later on.

Well, I've moved off my iBurst, and moved back onto our LAN/64k diginet line. Slower, but more reliable. That's a shame. Really. And another of those "We know there's a problem" emails aint gonna fix it this time.

Hmm, funny the WBS comm thread and they have not posted a comment for ages

Im sure Dylan said somewhere that he would be posting in this thread.

You should change this thread to No communication from WBS to its customers....

Go and have a look at vodacom3g thread....constant comms and updates from vodacom, clarifying technical issues that users are assking, as well as cost of service etc etc......

Positive comments from users as well....
