Hi Everybody

I have a Asus notebook, brand new. I have opened the notebook reloaded the notebook with my own OS image and installed all Asus drivers and software.

Problem notebook stops charging, unplug charger and plug back in charge for a short while

The Asus notebook supplier dont want to refund or give me credit because they say the following

1. I have opened notebook
2. I have loaded another Windows image

The notebook has no physical damage

So do I have any legal ground to stand on?

Looks like a catch all for we screwed you over:

  • the product has been tampered, repaired and/or modified by non-authorized personnel;

Outside of the warranty does it explicitly state that the device is only to be run on xyz OS?

“Regarding the ASUS laptop that was sent in to us today .

A 3rd party has opened the laptop , there are marks all the way around the palm rest/ bottom cover , there is a pimple mark on the palm rest where the incorrect screw was used .

The original ASUS OEM image has been removed and non-ASUS windows 10Pro has been installed . On a quick assessment we found the mic is not picking up , this is probably due to the incorrect image on the laptop .

We have charged the battery to 100 % to test the capacity and the battery does charge fully . We have ran a quick ASUS Linux based battery test ( around 10 minutes ) the test finds no problem with the battery , we ran two independent battery tests , also no fault was found .With the laptop not having the original ASUS OEM image on it , the image is the first place to start , we will need to reload the image on the laptop . We will have to download the image from ASUS , this can take a few days .

Please note that ASUS wont cover the warranty due to 3rd party tampering on the unit .”

I recently had to disassemble a brand new Laptop for a client who bought it to replace a Laptop which previously had an SSD. The new laptop had a standard hard disk and the client couldn't handle the lack of responsiveness when launching apps.

I informed the client that warranty would definitely be void if I did the installation of an SSD. In this particular laptop, there was a tamper sticker on one of the hard drive screws.

At any rate, from reason 1, I can see how they would be unwilling to honour warranty.

Reason 2 to my mind would not be an acceptable reason to void warranty though. They can't dictate to you which version of Windows (if Windows at all) you are allowed to use with your device.

Put it on full insurance with your household policy
Put furked laptop on your car roof at home
Drive away nice and slow and reach 175km/h, hit brakes as hard as you can with both feet
Laptop broken
Claim

You're Welcome

No, Please don't do this, Im drinking

As far as I understand. No. You void the Warranty and probably was the one causing the damage. It is like me opening up my espresso machine and still expect them to honour the warranty.

From consumer protection, who knows.

So....what happened here then?

So my plan is to reload Windows 10 Home on it and all drivers. And see if the notebook battery charges. Then maybe I can take it back to the supplier....

I think that would be the best option and most probably solve the issue. And of course installing all the correct drivers and firmware.

The issue was not so much the OS you installed, but the fact that you opened the machine.

Honestly, I don't hold much hope, but it's worth a try.

Followup question... Does the laptop charge fully on it's own (no disconnects) when it's plugged in but powered off?

Nope

If it was opened they wont help you

And if supplier dont take it back I will sell the notebook...that's life, you learn from your mistakes and dont do it again...
