Cool Ideas Fixed 5G/4G Feedback Thread

Hi everyone!

Really keen on the Cool Ideas packages ,looks great!
I need to decide between MTN and Vodacom - I'm mainly looking for high donwload speed and a low PING even when traffic is heavy.

What package is the best and which service providor MTN or Vodacom?

I'm based in JHB South- Mulbarton area!
Appreciate the feedback!
Hi there, thank you for your interest!
Unfortunately we cannot really guarantee which provider will work best in your area, or provider the lowest latency. That typically depends on how close you are to the nearest tower, your placement of the router in the home, wireless interference, etc.

You can always go for one of the options, and switch to the alternative if its not performing.
Regarding the package you choose, depends on your usage, as each package has its own FUP

You can find out more details on this via this link: https://coolideas.co.za/5g-packages/
You can also perform a coverage check with this link https://coolideas.co.za/coverage?type=5G

The best option would be fibre ofc, if available in your area. Fast and low latency :)

I will be honest, "I'm mainly looking for high donwload speed and a low PING even when traffic is heavy" is not possible unless you limit the speed ie. say you get 100mbps down you limit it to 90mbps to keep the ping lower likely need another router to achieve this.

Since you are in JHB, latency should be around 20-30ms on either package, Fibre is more suited for low latency requirements

HI there, I don't believe we have public IP's available on our 5G packages as yet, but should be in the pipeline.
However there are ways around that, such as cloudflare tunnels, or something similar like Tailscale that does not require a domain like cloudflare does.
What would the turnaround time be to sign up for this as I cancelled my Afrihost package

If you order today, the order typically gets process same day, and shipped , since its a lot quicker to activate than a Fibre line.

You have the option to collect at our Victory park Offices, or a delivery which should deliver the next day or within 48 hours.

Thanks for the quick response, with regard to fibre, From Vuma Aerial how does the migration work generally

You would first need to place a cancellation (if not done already) with your current ISP, and they will give you a last date of service.

You can then place an order with us at any time, provide your RICA documents, and photos of installation, or any other info our team may require, via your order ticket.

You can then communicate your last date of service with our team, as they can only place the order with Vuma once its been released by your current ISP (last date of service)
Then it typically can take up to 72 hrs for the link to be activated by Vuma.

Realized when doing payment, it would be pointless having two services running at the same time and likely will pay for delivery closer to the Afrihost cancellation date.

No worries at all, wuold recommend placing the order at least a week before the cancellation date, to prevent any delays.:)

@Borax945: Vodacom is usually faster in terms of download speed and I believe it is still not restricted to a particular location like the MTN service. I think that you can also use it on a 4G router if necessary and the data caps have still not been implemented unlike MTN where they are applied.

If you are planning to do any online gaming then I believe MTN would be the better choice as it does not suffer from the latency issues that are unavoidable with the Vodacom service.

I have been using the cheapest CI 5G Vodacom product since September 2025 and I have been very happy with it so far. I do use a small Cell C Home Connecta Flexi prepaid bundle when I require better latency.

I play a number of AliExpress games online using the CI 5G service and I only switch to the Cell C bundle when attempting to convert my gaming points into vouchers due to the heavy demand which necessitates very quick response times.

Here are a few freebies from my April haul from the AliExpress World Tour Go Game. Just search for the R36S and the Meshtastic threads if you are unfamiliar with these very popular products.

I have a Fanvil X3S Lite Voip phone connected via Ethernet to a ZTE G5TS 5G router which I use to make and receive Voip calls (@33c/min all networks) and also to send DTMF tones (using RFC2833) to open the gate of my residential complex when I receive deliveries from UberEats, Yassir Express and Sixty60 etc. I recently purchased an Uber One subscription for R50/pm due to the recent petrol price increases to reduce my petrol consumption substantially.

If you are not happy with your first choice of network you can change it once you have a better idea of your requirements.

Don't Miss Out ! It's time to join the Cool Crowd !
