Cool Ideas Fixed 5G/4G Feedback Thread

@CoolEscalator
Asking for a friend who wants to sign up for your 300GB-fup package. 5G is really strong where he lives, so streamers like Prime video will eat that quickly in 4K. Will he be able to use the G5TS in 4G mode? (you can't set quality level with Prime, it auto adjust along with your speed)
Although that is no guarantee to prevent high data usage even if forced to 4G as that can easily reach 50-150mbps which will still select 4K on prime or any streaming service. Best bet would be to get a router to handle this, my old Huawei AX3 could limit the bandwidth for a specific device say my TV box to 2mbps which would lock it to stream at 720p to 1080p

Sadly you can only use specific routers with the Cool-ideas packages, like the G5TS

@Finhobbyist: I think the 4G access is only available on the Vodacom products, not on MTN. I have successfully used my CI/Vodacom SIM in my 4G phone/routers on occasion.

If you order an unlocked G5TS for R750 from Cool Ideas you should be able to use it for any 5G service in the future - Telkom, Comsol, Cell C etc.

Hi there, apologies for the delayed response. Yes you can force 4G as mentioned by the above post. This would be in the developer settings

Indeed , best would be to use a router behind the G5TS, that can be set to DHCP from the G5TS, then you can use QOS on that router to rate limit

No fibre coverage where your friend is?

I joined CoolIdeas on 31Aug26 and am very happy so far. Got the Vodacom 450/50 package.

I don't know if this has come up here before?
When I check my data used on my ZTE modem, it shows a value substantially higher than the value reported on the Vodapay app.
Which reading is more accurate?

I'm glad you have enjoyed the service thus far!.
I have checked the ZTE before, and calculated the session data we have on our end, and typically its around 90-95% accurate on the ZTE, within a margin of error of 5-10GB Typically. (More)
So I would more or less trust the ZTE reading :)

Im not sure how Vodapay is integrated into this? Does it pickup ip accounting on our Voda sims?

The Vodapay app appears to show the data usage from 27th August with most of the usage on the 27, 28, 29 and 30 August - not sure whether you signed up on 31 August or before ?

Usually the G5TS is configured to reset the data usage on the 1st of every month so I'm not sure whether you are showing data usage over the same period of time ?

I just checked as well, it seems like they also know the type of traffic the data usage was for as well, such as youtube, MS teams, etc...

I wonder if they are doing DPI on the traffic between the CISP cross connect and us.

My sim was only switched on on the 31st
The bars indicate the websites where data was used.
Below is the Vodapay data for yesterday and 'Amazon' is probably Amazon Prime that I watched last night.
This looks quite accurate, as my normal usage is around 10GB/day.
My G5TS is set to reset on the 1st
