Core Ultra 5 225H dropping frames on Youtube

Hi all

Have an odd issue, just got an Asus Vivobook S 16 and have been loving the battery life and gorgeous screen (OLED)

But the PC just feels so laggy, especially on Youtube videos on chrome where it drops frames constantly and skips stutters. Now I do not expect it to handle 4K 60fps video but it cannot even handle 1080p 30fps content, the frame drops stop when set to 720p

The laptop can play Fortnite on 1080p medium at 60fps but barely plays HD video?

Tried updating the drivers, did not help, made sure windows is up to date as well. Reinstalled drivers etc with no improvement.

The laptop is not cheap either so it should not be doing this.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this before I just return it
 
You can also install something like https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

and check if it is not overheating, throttling and when it lags what is happening.

But if a new machine is doing this and you done all the basics checks I would just return it and get something else. Try stay away from thin laptops as they tend to run hot and throttle, unless you consider an Apple machine.

Screen is a 3K 120hz OLED

It sounds to me like a hardware issue. I had a R30K (new R45K at the time) Dell Precision and it gave major issues even after Dell tried everything in the book to fix it.

Your specs I don't think it should be laggy so there is something and will just get worse over time.

Damn, really will miss this screen, maybe I also feel the Arc graphics are just weak
 
I suspect a driver issue, did you reinstall from the intel website or the support page of your model from the manu's website?

I suggest downloading the Intel Driver & Support assistant. If it picks up stuff to update, then update them. Do a clean driver install if given the option. Sounds very much like a driver issue.

I have a laptop with a 13700H that I use for work and it handles youtube just fine.

Will do, I did execute a clean driver install when I updated the drivers via Intels Utility

Even scrolling through takealot there frame drops

Edit: Ran the assistant it found one update for the NPU (Handles AI stuff)
 
The only other thing I would try is to download the specific driver for your laptop from the Asus website. Perhaps they have done something different that makes things work. Would do that as a last resort.

You should download GPU-z see what clocks the GPU is meant to run at, load a youtube vid and look in the sensors tab of GPUz to see if its actually hitting the right clocks. Also download Furmark and do the same.

Have you tried other browsers too?

It is older though like 2024 drivers on Asus's website

Honestly seems Youtube calmed down a bit with lag but now even scrolling through Asus's website has massive frame drops

No just chrome, will check the above too

That seems strange.

Make sure Dynamic refresh rate is Off?

Download MSI afterburner or equivalent to check if something is running hot and throttling.
 
A long shotr - is hardware accelleration enabled in the browser?

Chrome/Edge: Visit chrome://gpu to check if hardware acceleration is active. If it's blocked, try enabling the flag #ignore-gpu-blocklist via chrome://flags—many users have reported smoother playback, even on older devices

Your machine should handle 4k/60 no problem. In Device Manager, post a screen shot of your display adapter driver tab. Also, try using Firefox to test Youtube.
