Hi there - I've been using the ZTE MF 190 speedstick (2GB/ month package) since March and getting reliable EDGE connection in Hibberdene, KZN.
However, for the past week I've been connecting at HSPA speeds on the odd occasion, which was great. I assume my location must be on the very outskirts of the current coverage area, hence the intermittent signal.
The problem is that when the HSPA signal is not available, I have NO signal at all. EDGE may be slow but at least I'm able to connect (I've not had any signal since Friday morning).
Could the CellC representative please advise.
Thanks

Those pictures relate to a theoretical situation, and certainly not to the CellC implementation.
UMTS 900, Cell ID: 45051, Signal Strength: -63dBm, Download Speed: 9.01Mbps

UMTS 2100, Cell ID: 40544, Signal Strength: -95dBm, Download Speed: 3.52Mbps

Attaching to the same tower, 1100m away.

Does your dashboard have a '2G Only' or 'GPRS/EDGE Only' option?
Consider getting an external antenna so that you can use HSPA all the time.

Have tried network modes 'GSM only' and 'UMTS only' without success. The speedstick indicator remains red.
I would have thought that if the HSPA signal was too weak, I would still have EDGE at least?

Yes, I would have expected that too, at the very least you should be able to roam on Vodacom's EDGE.
Is your modem set to automatic operator selection?

I suggest you try to pick up EDGE from another location, if your modem is unable to pick up EDGE anywhere it might be faulty.
If the problem only occurs in your location, give the technical helpdesk a call on 084 155 5555.

Thanks, I will give it a try.
I doubt it's my modem as there's no problem connecting to either GSM or UMTS with a Vodacom sim

Can anyone tell me what the difference between the light and darker pink/red areas are on the coverage map? The legend describes it (combined) as "Cell C and national roaming coverage" Is there data coverage? *Any* data coverage?

Good Day koffiejunkie

Data is possible but will be slow, edge and below.
Phone will still function on voice and BIS etc...
Data stick would work in most of the areas, but there would be difficulties.

I got lost in Stilfontein the other day, and had to resort to Google Maps - managed to get Cell C EDGE, not great, but I managed to download the maps and find my way.

You got lost in Stilfontein? Are you sure you were in Stilfontein? ;)

Thanks for the info. I noticed that the phones were getting internet but I couldn't get anything with a 3G modem. Will try again in December.

Howick

Hello.

My first post on Mybroadband so hello to all.

My question goes to Cellc coverage in Howick Natal as I am considering the R1499 pre-paid package. The coverage map shows various degrees of red and pink over most of Howick. I am presently above Merrivale Heights so should get signal but will soon be moving down to Howick and would like to know if the reception is as per the coverage map.

Does Cellc have towers that cover the region or are they off another network?

Thanks.

I dont personally live there, but I have a friend that lives there... using some wireless provider as well... and its pretty crappy... so before doing anything drastic.... first test it and decide from there
