All in all, a very satisfying day for the home side. Sanga has a century, Mahela has a fifty, they are sitting comfortably on 252 for 2 and have just lost one wicket. It will be interesting to see if the pitch starts taking any turn tomorrow of not. Till not, it has stayed dormant. We will be back tomorrow. Ciao ciao.

Sri Lanka pulled off a nail bitingly close win. Draw was written in the score book already before Pakistan's collapse. Herath weaving his magic. And the chase just in time before rain had a chance to call curtains.

A year for the Sri Lankan lads in test cricket. Long may it last.

Saeed Ajmal to Tharanga, no run, missed stumping, but that's harsh, because Sarfraz was struck a painful blow on the side of the face as it bounced up alarmingly. Tharanga came down the track and the ball didn't turn. He went for a big heave and missed the line entirely. Sarfraz wasn't wearing a helmet, and it hit him hard on the ear as he turned his head as the ball loomed up at him. The physio is out with a wad of cotton. Might have been the topspinner from Ajmal. That bounced out of nowhere

Do wicket keepers not learn anything from history? A helmet should be mandatory if the wicket keeper is standing up to the stumps.

/waits for slow run-rate protagonists

Good session for Sri Lanka, no wickets lost and very few alarming moments for their openers. Sarfraz would have needed to slow time down Matrix-style to effect that stumping, so that shouldn't really count as a chance, but Ajmal has probed away pretty well so far. Rehman hasn't quite fine-tuned his radar yet, and Junaid has looked pretty good without doing too much in the air or off the pitch. Wahab's hurried both batsmen a couple of times, but he's also given them a few freebies. Pakistan have kept the run rate down to well under 3 an over, but they'll lose whatever control they have maintained if this partnership carries on for too much longer.

5.30pm And with that, it's stumps. Stunning bowling performance from Pakistan after losing the toss and going wicketless in the first session. It was the fast bowlers who brought them back into the game, and as is often the case, their most dangerous work came with the older ball. Wahab Riaz was expensive but Pakistan will take that if he can bowl a ball, and an over, like he did to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara, and Junaid Khan was simply brilliant. The way he worked Thirimanne out was just a pleasure to watch, putting doubt in his head with one incoming ball and then bowling a series of away-curlers.

The two of them have taken three more wickets with the second new ball and Sri Lanka will feel they've had a poor day, especially after the start their openers gave them. Upul Tharanga, who wasn't certain to play, looked shaky at first but his footwork grew increasingly assertive as the day progressed and he made a pretty impressive 92. This pitch has confounded all pre-match predictions, so far, but it's still a good one for batting, and it's quite possible it might be at its best to bat on tomorrow and day after. If that is the case, Pakistan could well work themselves into a winning position, but all of that is very far away.

Pakistan bowled 85 overs including the extra half hour allowed. 48 overs from the spin bowlers. Amazing.

Sri Lanka gave it away after the good start they got. Got the impression that the quicks were getting decent swing, which must have made it really difficult to score.

Sri Lanka's last two pairs have added 59 today. Much more than Pakistan would have wanted, and it's taken them to a fairly useful first-innings score. This pitch isn't the usual SSC surface, but it's still a decent one to bat on. Let's see how Pakistan's batsmen will play from here, particularly after their second-innings implosion at Galle.

Pakistan's openers got off to a quick start without really convincing anyone with their techniques, but Sri Lanka would definitely have been concerned by the rate of scoring. Mathews brought Herath on early, after just four overs, and he's struck a very important blow with a smart piece of bowling. Khurram, though, will be wondering why on earth he followed such a wide ball if he was only looking to defend

Tea - Day 2

2.40pm And that is tea. Would have been an excellent session for Pakistan if they hadn't lost those two wickets at the end, and a good one if they had lost just one, but as it happened, Sri Lanka clawed their way back. They've bowled pretty well, not given too much away, and stayed in the game even when Shehzad and Azhar looked absolutely impregnable
