I think he should step down. They have a few good, young players coming through, but his form as both captain and batsman just seems to be holding the team back. Time for KP as England captain. :)

If Vaughan does stand down, the search will be on for his successor, with Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss the frontrunners within the current team. Paul Collingwood would also be an option, but despite his 135 in the second innings at Edgbaston, he has been through a troubled time of late.

I think poms will get a lead of 250-ish and we will get it with 5 down.

Have you been following the match?

It's a low-scoring match... Average scores are low and suggest that 250 is just about the average for the first innings. I was trying to say that there is no way that England can score 300 plus in their second innings, if the first innings is already so low. This is just my opinion though. Under better conditions, I think things would be different.

England 2nd innings
363 all out (lead 280)

South Africa 2nd innings
Total (5 wickets; 80 overs; 341 mins) 283

;)

nothings impossible... just highly unlikely

Don't forget that this was the 1st innings. In 2nd innings, teams usually score less. But we'll see how it pans out.

Can I just say: "Told you so" :p

/Gloating mode engaged

<Insert snide comment here>

Well I am happy we finally did it :)

A bit of a worry with Nel, Ntini and Morkel all having light injuries....

LOL :D well, I did say 'not impossible' !!

But what a game, you need those 'highly unlikely' things in a game to make it great, and I reckon this was one of our great tests. At least for the last couple of years.

How many people really thought Smith could do it? For many that was highly unlikely. ;)

Yeah Gream is really growing into the captaincy, think he still has a bit to go before he is one of the greats, but the potensial is there :)

Killa - do u try to stir in all sport threads?

How can u say that a win in England is nothing special. We havent won there since the 60's!!!!! Winning there is truely special!

England were ranked higher than us in the test rankings, so its even more special that we take that position away.

What i dont get is, why are South Africas so negative? Always have something negative to say about something good. ALWAYS! It gets very irritating.

Killa, stick to Pro20 - it is clear you know nothing about the real format of the game.

Yeah why don't we give the boys their due and worry about Aus later.
I know what will be said WHEN we beat the Aussies... weak team, no Mcgrath, no Gilly, no Warne...... etc.
This was GREAT effort and Eng is by no means a "weak" / "poor" team.

Collingwood also stepped down as one-day captain.

They will announce a new captain on Monday.

So Vaughan lost his first and last test matches as captain of England against Graeme Smith :) His first game as captain was at Lords in 03 which they lost by an innings and some runs.

I really think you need a captain thats a character in own right, with a lot of grit and thick skin.

KP fits that more or less.... Can only see the pomms doing better under him :)

I personally think the Collingwood deserves Captaincy !

Collingwood's position was in jeopardy so not sure they will go from contemplating dropping him to making him captain in one week... but then again this is English cricket so who knows! :)

And Flintoff lost the ashes...
Won't be one of their bowlers, or the keeper.
Cook to young, Bell lucky to be there still...

Either Strauss or KP.
