I use to be involved with Neighborhood watch when we lived in Cape Town. Crime is just as bad. I saw it all.

Sorry to hear man. The invasion of privacy is what really gets to you, I know what you mean.
These pigs are so bad they came back to my tenant's place 3 other times to try get the plasma tv they'd been unable to get at the 1st break-in. Failed all 3 other times because I'd beefed up security, they did settle for the copper water piping outside the house leaving me with a huge water bill. Fskers!

This happened to us plenty of times before we decided to finally leave. You have 2 options, put up with it. Or emmigrate. Its not going to get better!Count your lucky stars you and your partner are OK.

So what. A basic alarm system does not scare off your average house breaker, but it sure as heck makes life a bit more difficult for them. I cannot imagine how our house would've looked like if we did not have an alarm system with the last break-in.

Quite a comedian eh?! How about being tied up using YOUR OWN electrical extension lead and then getting smacked in the face with YOUR OWN cooking pans and then having them threaten to rape YOUR DAUGHTER if you dont give them your safe combo/keys.
You have absolutely no clue what motivates people to emigrate, and judging from your comments, you never will understand until something bad happens to you.
Do you really think that people emigrate to other countries just 'cos the grass is greener? They emigrate 'cos THERE IS GRASS on the other side. People dont emigrate 'cos they WANT TO - Do you think its an easy task to start a new life from ZERO? No money, no credit rating, no car, no house! Is that the Easy way?
It takes more guts to take control and guarantee your future and be pro-active, than just be a statistic in the random selection game of SA Crime 101. Adding an alarm is not pro-active, its a kneejerk reaction, buying a gun is a kneejerk reaction...these all are plasters on the underlying wounds in SA, and no plaster can stop the bleeding.

Emigration comes at a very high financial and emotional cost, but well worth it considering the high risk of staying.

No. I am not a comedian. I'm just being realistic here. I won't ever emigrate just cause some jerk tried breaking into my house. Whether he managed to do it or not is a moot point. Just because he got in means there is a weak point in my security.
I can imagine what motivates Other people to emigrate, it differs from person to person, but Molokai did not even give it a thought, his mind went straight from Crime to Put Up With It to Emigration! There are loads of other options, but those are the ones he suggested. Suggesting emigration to someone as a knee-jerk reaction is not cool imo.
Bad stuff has happened to me in the past, but Emigration was the last thing that popped up in my mind. In certain cases I see that as running away from the problem. In certain other cases I see it as a valid option. But there need to be some persistent idiots before I even start to think about emigrating. Moving would be my second last option before emigration. But all of this depends on practical things like where there are jobs available etc etc.
So removing my alarm system would be pro-active then? Common now, think for a minute. Why do you have burglar bars? Why do you lock your car? Just to make life more difficult for the idiots out there. But no one is stopping you, remove those burglar bars, leave your car outside unlocked. I could go on...
In any case, we have the technology to help us protect our belongings, so why not use it to our advantage?

Today it was a simple break in, tomorrow its what? Emigration is not running away from your problems, it in fact more difficult than you can ever imagine. What you class as 'running away', others class as 'Securing a future'.
besides... I don't have burglar bars, I don't have an alarm, and I do leave my car unlocked quite often, and yes - I ran away after the above scenario, it was not hypothetical. (Call me a chicken if you want, but I don't play russian roulette with my families lives)
cure the disease, not treat the symptoms.

If anybody enters my home to attack my family or steal any possession I would not think twice about shooting them and burying them.
Sounds cruel but why should any of us go to jail because somebody invaded our homes?
BEST POST TO DATE! I agree with you. ONLY when and if you have been affected by crime and become a statistic you will understand what other people go through. I've had to deal with this crap too many times in this country. Those people that's never been affected directly by crime are lucky. It is the worse feeling in the world and to top it off the Insurance companies makes YOU feel like the criminal.
Like other security another way to get criminals to seek an easier target, but anyone who wants to rob your house can easily get by your dogs. Although of course if you have a whole pack bloodthirsty hell-hounds, it may be more effort than it's worth.

Today it is a break in and tomorrow you are running to the next country? No man. I won't call you a chicken, I just think it is stupid to "run away" after a break in. These things can happen anywhere in the world and there are only so many countries you can emigrate to after something seemingly """dramatic""" happens in your new country.
And emigrating is NOT curing any disease by the way. The disease you need to cure is ... theft? How do you cure that? Stricter laws? Dunno if that will work - unemployment in SA is just too high and I think the common criminal has fallen into a rut in any case.
As long as you use your right to vote (if you stay an RSA resident), wherever you end up, then I don't care.
Regarding the whole securing a future thing... valid point and all, but you don't go and secure a future just because some idiot broke into your home. You only go and secure a future if you do not have a future here to begin with - that includes things like a job/house etc and random other factors.
+1 And I am part of that statistic. I know how you feel.

Sorry to hear what happened.
I've got Nigerian drug dealers at the first house on my dead-end stretch of road in a northern Jhb suburb. The best protection yet, there has been a house break-in in years! There's always fancy cars parked outside at odd times of day and night, and there's always someone to meet the people who arrive. So we've got a constant watch on the road and I got the impression they didn't like the cops coming around. Very friendly and happy guys though (on the surface anyways...).
Anyways, it's sad to see our youth turning to crime to make a living. And it's sad also to see how many people buy these stolen TVs and appliances etc. for really ridiculously low prices, I've seen Doctors (private doctors, not your government variety) and Accountants (Accountants might be understandably to some, low lifes) buy these cheap, almost new, fallen from heaven appliances even when they can afford to buy a new, not stolen one.
FYI, most criminals I know (and I know a good few) don't sleep well at night (or day).

Drugs are a big problem, that attitude that Nigerians are on your corner and you're protected is fine for you but it's also a "stuff you charlie" to everyone else that those

I agree totally, even though it has helped me in a way, I have a strong guilty conscience that wants me to raise the issue with the local police. And, before we even worry about impact on other people, life is such that I probably drive out of my road into another and get shot by a drug addict wanting to hijack my car to feed his drug habit... point taken!
Zero tolerance to crime is maybe the best option then, drug dealers might not necessarily break into your house but the addicts they feed might do so... same with buying pirated DVDs then, those very DVDs go into funding those very same Nigerian drug dealers (well, according to the music and movie industry anyways)...

We had Rashid Staggie living opposite the road from us (one of his quite a few houses). One evening some fellows tried to hit our cars, Staggie's bodyguards shot at them, I suspect they're still running
Doesn't make me want to live close to a Nigerian drug lord tho...

If we leave this crime situation for much longer, it will become part of our lives and infinitely harder to deal with. We will end up being grateful for having only 3 burglaries a year instead of 5.

after reading all this I cant believe that anyone wouldnt want to emigrate with all the s h i t that is going on here in South Africa. I was born in Cape Town, and I love it... but these days the country is getting more and more f u c k e d up! Im not saying its going to happen BUT take a look further north and look what their "veterans" are up to. It all starts somewhere, and I bet you our friends up north also had a starting point.. where people must have thought to themselves, "oh **** this is not looking good"
I read this article this afternoon and I had that exact reaction.
My girlfriend is Canadian, and has been in Cape Town for two years, and the comparison will totally blow your mind. Im not saying that Canada has zero crime (grass is greener blah blah blah), but where would you prefer to live? In a town where there are 4 highjackings a month or 20 per day! Not a real example, just making a point...
Not everyone can afford a huge house with high walls, electric fencing etc etc so moving to another country is a real option.
