I get all the emails as far as I'm aware, and I haven't got an email relating to news servers. Either they haven't sent them or they're going out slowly in batches.

For what it's worth I got mine at 18:40 last night.

It was under the Promotion's tab in my Google folders for some reason.

Anyway. You'll get a new news server username - a long and convoluted string of characters as well as a new password.

Hi, signed up for a trial account, received a password via SMS but not sure what the userid should be as I did not receive one. I assume it's not the email I registered with?

Mine also landed in the Promotions Tab (also time stamped 18:40)

Thanks for the info.

Yeah I get emails no matter how Gmail classifies them, as I ordinarily have zero unread emails so new ones stand out. Even junk mail gets manually deleted.

Still no email about news servers. I'll hit up live chat later today if nothing is received by then.

Thanks for being helpful.

Anyone else?

These are the various types of reader:

1. Text newsreader – designed primarily for reading/posting text posts; unable to download binary attachments (example: non-GUI clients such as slrn)

2. Traditional newsreader – text-capable newsreader which can also handle binary attachments, although not as efficiently as more specialized clients (example: Forté Agent and Xnews)

3. Binary grabber/plucker – designed specifically for easy and efficient downloading of multi-part binary post attachments; limited or nonexistent reading/posting ability. These generally offer multi-server and multi-connection support. Most now support NZBs, and several either support or plan to support automatic Par2 processing (example: GrabIt, NewsBin, NewsLeecher). Some additionally support video and audio streaming (example: BinTube).

4. NZB downloader – binary grabber client without header support – cannot browse groups or read/post text messages; can only load 3rd-party NZBs to download binary post attachments (example: NZB-O-Matic, SABnzbd, Ninan, URD). Some incorporate an interface for accessing selected NZB search websites.

5. Binary posting client – designed specifically and exclusively for posting multi-part binary files (example: PowerPost, Sharkpost)

6. Combination client – Jack-of-all-trades supporting text reading/posting, as well as multi-segment binary downloading and automatic Par2 processing (example: Usenet Explorer)

Which type are you looking for?

Most people here probably use #4, within that, SABnzbd is the most popular.

In the 'old' days, I used Forte Agent as well (Type #2)

Has anyone tried the premium news server since it's been up? I've tried 3 random articles and I only get between 2Mbps and 3Mbps. That's a third of my linespeed at best. If I use an international server like Newshosting I get 10Mbps.

edit: I contacted them via live chat and nothing has been reported but they'll keep an eye on it.

I use grabit. It is good enough for what I want out of a news reader.

I customized the download, extract and cache folder locations. Grabit is set to automatically continue and stop when shutdown. I created a scheduled startup to start at 0:01 and stop at 05:58.

Quick Par helps with the repairs of the downloaded files.

The nzb's that is renamed to something like 1j3kg9df74i56m79 will not auto extract so I go to the download folder, nzb name and double click a .par file so Quick Par can decode the file and repair it. I then extract the files and copy it to the extract folder.

Sometimes I have to go into Winrar to extract the downloaded files - it all depends on the lenght of trouble the poster of the file went to hide the content from being DMCA'ed.

I set up Grabit to use Premium nntp with SSL on port 563. I get about 378 to 480 KB/s on my 4Mbps line.

Actually been getting more than my line speed here at 2.1-2.2 MB/sec on my 20Mbps line.

Getting full speed over here. 10MB/s. Very happy with this.

Thanks dude. I contacted their support. I have no idea why I'm not getting full speed. Nothing else is downloading and this is at 4-6am so there shouldn't be any shaping at that hour. My Xbox was killing it at virtually full speed around 8am so it's just nntp traffic from CW. When I switch to Newshosting I get full 10Mbps.

It must be something on my account.

I figured it out. After spending the day with emails back and forth to CW I eventually solved it. I upped the number of connections. I tested in increments of 10. 10 gave me 3MB/s. So I tried 20 connections. Lo and behold I get ~6MB/s and 40 gave me 9MB/s. I jumped to 50 connections and it's maxing out my line at 10MB/s.
