How do you 'fix' performance issues when you're oversubscribed then? What do you think Afrihost actually does when reports come in that Twitch can't stream for s**t, for example?

To be fair twitch doesnt come from a local CDN thats why its far from YouTube performance.

They don't oversubscribe
I dont agree with that. Purely my reason is on pricing vs uptake.

If you look at the difference in pricing between AH and CW, then its clear where people will go from a financial point of view.

While CW network is top notch, the pricing is still something which will detract potential clients from signing up. I was pretty much in that boat, would love to add another backup account, but the pricing was just a bit too much.

Will be interesting to see what the pricing will be next week, and if its good, then it will be a case and see what happens in terms of uptake.

So you can look at it and say Over subscribe on Afrihost part, but that's not the issue, because you want more customers to sign up, but you then have to properly manage capacity and ensure the network is run properly. If you can manage pricing and network well, then you are onto something.

Afrihost has pricing right, CW has network right.

You buy more capacity. They just start shaping downloads more so there is more capacity for streaming

You get what you pay for.
Is afrihost pricing still right if it means they have 50 to one contention compared to a more expensive isp running 20 to one?

Do they have a 50 to one contention ratio? You would want more people joining, so ultimately pricing is one way of getting people to sign up. Its a business after all. Are they risking performance? possibly, but that is Gian's problems to provide a balance between price and performance.

Again, no issues if CW is working great, and people are paying for that great performances. Ultimately people are going to ask for a price reduction, because certain packages just don't warrant such high pricing.

This is where Shaun could play a master stroke next week imo, if the price reductions are great, because then there is that balance between price and performance. However, will that price reduction then compromise network performances when more people sign up.

I have heard that they run around 50 on uncapped. But that's unverified hearsay.

How exactly does CW achieve such good network performance? I'm not looking for in-depth insider info, as a rough picture would suffice. Afrihost is constantly reporting issues to their network engineers and having things fixed. Does CW have people constantly monitoring popular internet destinations and optimising them? Does it have something to do with contention?

Everyone but CW seems to have their fair share of performance issues reported on this forum. CW clearly does something other ISPs don't.

It's because you're not yet adept at decoding Afrihost marketing speak. "reporting issues to their networking engineers and having things fixed" is code speak for "we seriously, seriously, seriously oversold our bandwidth and we simply don't have enough right now. Try again a bit later and there might be some free network capacity". In an attempt to manage this serious overselling of bandwidth, Afrihost employs complicated shaping (on their side) which translates into throttling on the client side. Usually if you complain about it loudly enough on a forum, one of the Afridudes and Afridudettes will give you access to a "test" account that isn't throttled. That'll shut you up for a week, and their image is saved on the forum.

Crystal Web, on the other hand, don't seem to oversell even nearly as bad. I've had a few isolated incidences of poor network performance, but it could have been anything and not necessarily due to Crystal Web. With Afrihost, on the other hand, it's symptomatic.

So what does Crystal Web do different? They don't degrade their products in an attempt to beat all the others on price. They price the product so that they can actually afford to run a network that can support their products. It's really that simple. If you go with the loss leader, you get a ****ty product.

Can you tell us when the announcement will be this week?
Seems there is lots of anticipation for this, and rightly so. We are really trying to initiate big things that will require your support. All of the information will be released this week but it's tough to precisely promise a day. Some media don't publish the information when sent so we're handling it ourselves, and that means managing the flow of information correctly so as not to cause confusion. When you're releasing multiple exciting things at the same time, the last thing you want is to bury important information in edited copy that causes unnecessary confusion or questions.

Fair enough!

I'll keep my eye on the CW site and my email for news letters.

keep losing Int for a few minutes at a time the last week ...... have to use *gasp* Mweb backup. Will jump on support soon, just wondering if anyone else is experiencing it?

Vuma are busy installing my link right now.

I have my router ready.

Want to sign up for your 100/100 package.

I see there are two options

1) 100 / 100 12 Month Contract at R1089
2) 100/ 100 month to month at R1599.

If I sign up for the contract and you do price reductions this week, or in the future - will I be stuck on R1089 a month for the next 12 months?
Or should I sign up for the month to month and wait to see how the pricing changes (if it will)

Thanks for the help

1k a month for 100 symmetrical uncapped is, IMHO, a no-brainer.
I can't see prices dropping anywhere near that for non-promo products for more than a year.
