LOL

We had to get 1500 expressions of interest in our suburb before Vumatel would come in.

We got them in. The RA drove it. NOT vumatel.

Which is different to me as an individual having to go out and sell Crystal Web's ADSL products to people I don't know. This isn't a matter of getting people to merely express their interest in fibre. I have to actually convince them to part with their money for ADSL until such time that the target of 40 homes is reached. They don't know how long this might take, or that the target will even be reached at all. Bearing in mind that ADSL is slower and more expensive than fibre, and Crystal Web isn't the cheapest of ISP's...

I understand that deploying fibre is expensive, but when you're calling this a "game changer" and mentioning a "certain global search engine" in teasers, you're creating hype you can't hope to meet.

Maybe this doesn't excite me because we're already earmarked for fibre, but still...if that weren't the case I think I'd have an easier time getting a few hundred people to express their interest in fibre than getting people to actually part with their money for an inferior product in the interim. It should be up to the ISP to convert expressions of interest into paying customers.

They will, you just won't be the champion that makes it happen... so if it takes long, don't blame them :)

You're right, they will. I will just have to get the municipal permissions, lay down the fibre, connect to an IX, buy and set up the required equipment, set up peering agreements with other local ISPs, pay for transit with an upstream provider. And if that takes long, it's my own fault and doesn't in any way mean that Crystal Web won't offer me fibre.

An idea for fiber champs. Anyone in your area who has dstv is a potential sign up.
The challenge is if they're a technophobe. If you can show them your streaming setup, you can convince them to drop dstv and get fiber.

Convinced my dad to do the same once he saw my kodi/netflix setup. (adsl though)

what? am i missing something here?

I just wish CW would be more transparent. Making an announcement of announcement is the opposite of transparent, yet every single drip of PR seems to follow the exact same cycle. Let us know what we'll be paying next month. Let us know what we'll be paying 6 months down the line. It's really not that complicated.

I don't think Ho3n3r is questioning the feasibility of your plans in terms of what it means for all your customers/potential customers.
He's saying that for him, this isn't great news.
It's his opinion.
My opinion? I didn't like the idea of singing up neighbors/strangers when Cybersmart released this, still don't.
But that's just me.

OK but that's exactly the part I take issue with... :erm:

Yes, that area auto-qualifies. In many areas very few signups are actually even required. We cannot release our customer location data though, so this is done on our end with planning guys.

So it won't be possible to ask "how many more do I need in my area?" If you don't disclose the location information?

You're missing that I'm making fun of you missing the entire point. But let me try to break it down for you even further via simple binary choices.

Can I order fibre via Crystal Web today and have them install it in relatively short order? If yes, shut up and take my money. If no, then no, Crystal Web do not offer fibre to me. It's really that simple. Then you can scream and cry all you want about how it's my own fault that Crystal Web aren't offering this service to me, but the fact is that they don't.

Now, since Crystal Web aren't offering this service to me, then any announcement about such a service is completely irrelevant to me, and the same goes for 99% of the people who were waiting for this week's announcement. It's not relevant to them, since the announcement isn't about any service offered to them. This is the point you seem to have completely missed.

I for one am more interested in the other 4 announcements. The question still has not been answered if they will take place today.

In other words, you:
1. don't want to help your favourite ISP get into your area;
2. you don't want to be actively involved in getting yourself fibre as soon as possible;
3. you don't want free internet.

But you do:
1. want the best service;
2. want the fastest internet;
3. want it to be as cheap as humanly possible; (but not free as stated above)
2. you want it tomorrow.

Think I've got it now, thanks.

as i understand it, that information will be given to you when you sign up as a champion.

Yeah sorry I was still reading down the list and it seems to have been answered.

I have no idea why all these announcements couldn't just have gone out with the original announce.

Make one email with summaries and web links to each related thing.

Now it's just breeding confusion.
