Is he running the cable inside conduiting?

Not any that he brought, as he said it wasn't necessary for our installation. The cable swings from the pole to our house, goes straight into the attic space and then drops down into the existing trunking in the study that contains all the network cabling for the home network.

Ah yes happiness is nice and simple

It would have been, if any one of the three fibres on my pole responded to the technician's line tester. He's phoning around trying to find out what he must do. Entire installation is otherwise done. We just needed to plug everything in at the time his line testing unit showed no signal.

Edit: Apparently Nokia are a crap contractor. My dude is off to visit all the neighbouring poles in the hope of finding the issue. I'm no longer optimistic we'll be up and running today.

Edit #2: The Telkom guy couldn't fix the issue by himself. He said Nokia are supposed to come around at 8.30 tomorrow morning to fix the problem that they're responsible for. And after such time, they have his number to notify him that it's been sorted.

I wonder if that connection is even live yet. My area has a lot of ungrounded fibre cables installed, all not turned on yet

Would be weird if that was the case. Going dark purple on the map should mean you're ready to rumble. I mean that's when they take your money and get cracking on your address. I guess I know nothing until Nokia come by tomorrow morning and have a look at what's wrong.

Eish. Always a snag.

My snag was that everything was connected on the Thursday then Telkom didn't have a 'router' available and it was only brought, connected and activated on Saturday. Friday was a loooong day lol

There were loads of complications with my previous fibre installation too, including the need to do major work on a nearby pole as well. It can be pretty frustrating...

At the end of the day though, I can't complain. If it weren't for the incompetent Nokia people I wouldn't have fibre at all. I just want them to get their infrastructure working.

Edit: I don't know whether or not the Nokia people actually started working on my problem at 8.30 as promised, but they have a large 5+ man crew at the pole now. They said it should be a 20 min fix - something to do with a splitter. So I'm just glad it's not a much bigger issue, like my area not actually being live yet. I'm really hoping my Telkom guy can stop by this afternoon and finish the job. Especially considering it's Friday.

My fibre is working!!

Well, sort of. The Nokia contractors fixed the issues with a bunch of poles, but the Telkom technician still needs to mount his equipment to the top of it. At the moment it's in a heap on the ground. He stopped by to look at what they did, but had to leave to finish a job he's doing. He said he'll do his best to stop by later today and finish up.

That said, I noticed the lights on the ONT device were blinking normally. So I hooked everything up and configured my router for the ethernet port and it's working. Speeds however are not great. Upload is good (between 40 and 50Mbps), but download peaks at 85 and stabilises around 55-65Mbps. I'm really, really hoping this will be resolved with the correct mounting of the equipment and perhaps the rebooting of all devices concerned.

My 1GB Afrihost account isn't working at all on the fibre line so I can't test if it's a CW issue.

Shesh - pics please, intrigued to see what your fibre installation looks like thus far, sounds like an eyesore!

Okay things are looking good! I just had to 'power cycle' my ONT device. :o

CW live chat sorted me out. Currently getting around 94Mbps now, and that's with the home network very much in use. I'll run a proper test later to see what the absolute max speed is.

Thanks Crystal Web and @MickeyD !! Even with the complications, it's quite remarkable that I applied for fibre around 5pm on Monday this week.

Edit: Speed seems to max out at this:

Not sure why it's not the 97Mbps I used to get at the previous address, but I'm still very, very happy!

No, not an eyesore. It's just a cable swinging from the pole to my house, then running through the attic space and dropping into the trunking in the study that was already holding the many cables for the home network. There's a little black box on the ground by the pole that still needs to be mounted by the technician, but otherwise everything is done.

OK, "a bunch of poles" had me worried :p

On the bright side by the time fibre reaches me the installation teams will have years of experience and I shouldn't have any problems :D

Hehe. I had a single Telkom technician doing all the work at my place. At the previous address it was a team of 3 and a 4th guy appeared frequently. I think they're much more geared up and experienced now.

The bunch of poles were the poles leading to the main fibre link. It sounded like the Nokia guys have spent hours fixing their shoddy area installation, going from pole to pole.

Crystal Web leak?

So i got a FB notification saying my password could have been stolen

Did abit of research and found my email here: <removed - old news>

Youch, that's nasty. The passwords do make for some funny reading though. I hope CrystalWeb notifies all those customers ASAP about this!
